1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aleksander Emelyanenko! The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Sam Margolis and Steven Brown.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Emelyanenko walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Surman checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side. Surman keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Surman decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Emelyanenko is staying active underneath Surman, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Surman prevents Emelyanenko from improving his position. Emelyanenko is refusing to be controlled, as Surman sits in half guard. Surman throwing shots but Emelyanenko is blocking nicely. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Surman postures up in Emelyanenko's guard and throws a big left but Emelyanenko blocks it. Surman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Surman accidentally thumps the mat. Taylor Surman dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Surman leaves Emelyanenko with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Surman closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Emelyanenko to the mat! Emelyanenko manages to get full guard. Surman throwing strikes from guard but Emelyanenko blocks nicely. Emelyanenko clinches up with Surman and pushes him back against the cage. Surman has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Emelyanenko after a bit of a struggle. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Emelyanenko tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Taylor Surman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Surman gets a trip takedown into half guard. Surman is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Emelyanenko is just riding it out for now. Surman eventually gives up the hold. Surman is working for a submission of some sort.
