PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between The Boss King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matthew Roberts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, The Boss King!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Matthew Roberts!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Jeff Smith and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
King moves to clinch but Roberts breaks away

and Roberts counters with a takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
King parries the strikes from Roberts easily there. Roberts is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable King to escape.
King is letting Roberts control him for a moment.
King can't do much from the bottom here.
Roberts has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Roberts tries for a kimura but King is defending well.

Roberts decides to stand up, so the ref orders King to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Roberts moves into range and clinches up with King.
King is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
King is trying to pull guard but Roberts turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Roberts wants to break the clinch but can't.

Roberts jumps guard.

Roberts kicks King off and gets to his feet.
Roberts shoots in for a double leg but King sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Roberts has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics King uses from the top position.
King knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Roberts on the ground.
King trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Roberts is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst King is controlling him.

King wants to pass the guard but Roberts is keeping the position.
Roberts throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Roberts uses the cage to get back to his feet.

King misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

King throws a low kick but it's checked well by Roberts.
Roberts tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

The Boss King has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matthew Roberts.

Roberts closes the distance and clinches.
Roberts just leaning against King, taking a breather.
King has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Roberts avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
King tries to pull guard but Roberts holds him up against the cage and eventually King drops back down to his feet.
King jumps guard but Roberts stands there with King around his waist. King gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
King is breathing heavily.

King looking to stall.
King tries a body shot but Roberts blocks it.
King has Roberts pressed against the cage, preventing Roberts from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
King is looking for a takedown.
Roberts keeps the fight in the clinch, despite King's efforts to push away.

Roberts turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Roberts manages to end up in side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Roberts stands up.
King doesn't manage to clinch there - Roberts circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matthew Roberts dominated that round.
That's time! King's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Roberts fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Roberts throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around King's waist but King gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Roberts off to one side.
King tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Roberts swivels and escapes.
A combination from King does no damage.
King tries to score a power double leg takedown but Roberts sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten King somewhat.

Roberts pushes King up against the cage in a clinch.
Roberts manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Roberts jumps guard.

Roberts pushes King off and scrambles back to his feet.

Roberts shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. King is trying to defend but Roberts finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

and Roberts counters with a nice body shot.
King stuffs the takedown attempt from Roberts. Roberts gets slowly back to his feet.
The Boss King has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matthew Roberts.
King throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Roberts.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Roberts throws a head kick that misses.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Roberts shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts King as he jumps to the side.

Roberts leaves King with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Roberts closes this distance looking for a takedown but King circles away.
Horrible takedown by King or perhaps it was just good defense by Roberts which made him look bad.

Roberts looking to score a takedown here. King is defending well but Roberts drives through and ends up in King's guard.

Roberts decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Roberts keeps the fight on the outside.
King tries to clinch

and Roberts holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Roberts is looking for a takedown up against the cage. King gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Roberts gets control of King's arms and successfully pulls guard. Roberts will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Roberts striking off his back but it's not causing King any problems.
Roberts has control of King's left arm, preventing King from doing any damage.
Matthew Roberts has got the better of the ground game so far.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
King trying to control the position from guard on top but Roberts is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Roberts can't keep his opponent in guard - King advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Roberts moves into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matthew Roberts showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Roberts slaps away a takedown attempt from King, before circling back to the center of the mat.

King tries to sprawl but Roberts drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Roberts wants to pass to mount but King is defending the position.
King is refusing to be controlled, as Roberts sits in half guard.
Roberts trying to mount his opponent but King defends it.
King is in trouble now - Roberts has advanced to mount!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Roberts throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Roberts is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But King has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from King!

Roberts has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but King can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Roberts manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. King manages to get himself to full guard.

Roberts passes King's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Roberts tries to pass the half guard into mount. King knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
King avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Roberts.
Roberts works his foot free and advances to mount.

Roberts controlling from mount.
King sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Roberts is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Roberts takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Roberts wants to work for an arm triangle but King is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Roberts decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Roberts manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Roberts has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Roberts tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. King just stands there and leans against the cage.
The Boss King has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Matthew Roberts is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Matthew Roberts comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Roberts has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
