Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Wazza Rooney! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jay Warner! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Arvi Lind and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Warner shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Warner showed some decent athleticism there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Warner looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rooney with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Rooney wants to improve his position but Warner is controlling well.
Warner gets to his feet - back to striking we go! Rooney misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Warner.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. Warner fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Warner misses with a wild combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. Warner takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Warner blocks a low kick nicely. Rooney fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Rooney throws a front kick aimed at Warner's knee but Warner avoids it well. Warner fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Rooney to the ground. Warner is now in Rooney's guard. Rooney keeping moving, preventing Warner from controlling successfully. Rooney looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Warner postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rooney keeping full guard, as Warner tries to pass. Rooney tries to land a sweep but no joy. Rooney keeping moving, preventing Warner from controlling successfully. Warner drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rooney dives on top into guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Warner looking for a triangle here. Rooney is fighting it but it looks tight! Warner pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Rooney is tapping out - this one is all over!
