PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kofi Kingston (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Wong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wong has chosen Kendrick Lamar - RIgamortus as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kofi Kingston!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Wong!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kingston gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Wong tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Kingston breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kingston stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.


It looks like James Wong has been cut.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kingston.

Kingston shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Wong's guard.
Wong wants to stand and escape but Kingston is having none of it.
Kingston throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Kingston decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Wong, up you get!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Wong moves in looking to clinch but Kingston pushes him off.
Wong wants to clinch up but Kingston keeps it at a distance.

Kingston gets a takedown into half guard.
Kingston is taking a breather. Wong says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Wong makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
A leg kick checked by Wong.
Kingston scores with a jab.
Wong throws a head kick that half lands.
Wong falls off balance throwing a combination

and Kingston counters with a shoot takedown. Wong fights it but they end up in guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kingston gets to his feet. Wong looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Wong dodges the punch combination from Kingston.
The fight stays on the outside here - Wong looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wong is looking to chop away at Kingston's legs.
Kingston shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Wong as he avoids it easily.
Kingston tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wong swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kofi Kingston. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kingston is breathing heavily.
Kingston shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Wong but Wong pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Wong throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Wong tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Wong takes a swing at Kingston's ribcage but misses.

Kingston feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Wong is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kingston is controlling him.
Kingston stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wong swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wong wants to stand but Kingston is controlling the position.
Kingston is pushing down on Wong's leg trying to pass to half guard. Wong is fighting to maintain full guard but Kingston has managed to sneak the leg through.
Kingston has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Kingston seems to be working for a kimura but Wong defends the submission attempt.
Kingston winds up and cracks Wong with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kingston is taking a breather. Wong says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Kingston is nestled in close to Wong, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Kingston keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Wong kicks Kingston off and gets back to his feet.

Kingston throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Wong was covering up waiting for the punch and Kingston finishes the takedown easily into guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kingston pushes down on Wong's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Kingston has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Wong defend it? Kingston steps over the head and cranks it - Wong is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Kingston!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Kofi Kingston!
