Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jon Jones! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ben Askren! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Jeff Smith and Chris Saunders.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jones throws a head kick but Askren moves out of range.
Askren shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Jones's guard. Askren trying to control but Jones is working from the bottom. Askren throws a big right hand that misses. Askren content to stall in guard here. Askren is in close to Jones's body, working some short punches and elbows. Askren scoring with some ground and pound. Askren landing with the ground and pound. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Askren won't allow Jones to get back to his feet. Askren throws a strike but Jones rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Askren looking for a sweep. Not yet Askren, not yet. Askren has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Askren has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Jones prevents Askren from getting back to his feet. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Askren can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's two minutes gone in the round. This has been an exciting period of action! Askren looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Jones trying to control but Askren is working from the bottom. Askren is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Jones is aware though and is defending well. Askren has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Jones doesn't defend quickly enough and Askren has managed to lock this one up! Can Jones escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Askren on a fantastic submission victory.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Ben Askren! Ben Askren was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
