PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gary Hudson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hugh Matthews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hudson comes into the arena with Roll Over DJ blaring out of the sound system. Matthews has chosen God & Guns as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Gary Hudson could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Hugh Matthews's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gary Hudson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hugh Matthews!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, David Schapiro and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matthews uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Hudson.
Hudson avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Hudson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Hudson shoots in and gets a takedown into Matthews's guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Hudson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Hudson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Matthews can do anything to dispel that myth.

Hudson has his foot on Matthews's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Matthews works his way back into a safe position though.

Matthews throws a combination. Hudson tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Matthews ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Hudson closes the distance and clinches up with Matthews, looking for a takedown. Hudson pushes Matthews against the cage but Matthews circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Matthews stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Matthews wants it to stay on the feet.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Matthews missing with a left hand there. Hudson was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

That was a close round but I would say that Gary Hudson will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


No joy there for Matthews, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Matthews really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hudson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hudson connects with a nice short shot to Matthews's temple.
Gary Hudson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Hudson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Matthews was covering up waiting for the punch and Hudson finishes the takedown easily into guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hudson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Matthews pulls Hudson in close to prevent any damage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
