PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Wong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wong has chosen Kendrick Lamar - RIgamortus as his entrance music. Wong has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Wong!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes misses with a takedown attempt
and Wong counters with a straight right hand.
Hughes shoots in for a takedown but Wong shows good takedown defense.
Hughes closes the distance and clinches up with Wong, looking for a takedown. Hughes pushes Wong against the cage but Wong circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matt Hughes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hughes misses with a takedown attempt - Wong sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Wong got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hughes has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Wong has managed to get both his arms back between Hughes's legs - danger averted.
Wong throws a strike but Hughes rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Hughes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hughes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Hughes thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Wong's head.

Hughes has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Wong avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Hughes manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Wong loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

That was a close second round but I would say that Matt Hughes will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Hughes holds on and takes a little breather.
Wong really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hughes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Hughes bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Wong's guard.
Wong is wriggling around but Hughes manages to pass to half guard.
Wong wants to stand back up but Hughes manages to pass into side control.
Matt Hughes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Wong parries the strikes from Hughes easily there. Hughes is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Wong to escape.
James Wong has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hughes is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Wong will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Matt Hughes is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Hughes's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hughes, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
