PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ed Gruberman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pekka Myrynen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ed Gruberman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pekka Myrynen!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gruberman fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Myrynen sprawls well initially but Gruberman persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Gruberman is controlling the pace.
Gruberman seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Myrynen for as long as he can get away with.
Myrynen wants to get back to his feet.
Myrynen won't allow Gruberman to pass to mount.
Gruberman not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Gruberman seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Myrynen does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Gruberman is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Myrynen is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Gruberman bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Myrynen scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

Gruberman is looking for a sweep.
Myrynen takes a little break here. Gruberman wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Gruberman tries to bench press Myrynen off him but Myrynen keeps the position.
Myrynen is looking to take a break and control but Gruberman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Myrynen decides to take the fight back to the feet.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Myrynen clinches with his opponent.

Myrynen manages to break the clinch.
Gruberman takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Gruberman shoots in looking for a takedown. Myrynen tries to sprawl out of it but Gruberman keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Myrynen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Myrynen lands a really nice looking cross but Gruberman seems unphased.
Gruberman throws a jab when Myrynen was well out of range.
Myrynen throws a low kick but it's checked well by Gruberman.

Gruberman closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gruberman lands in his opponent's guard.

Myrynen wants to stand and escape but Gruberman is having none of it.
Gruberman passes Myrynen's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Myrynen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gruberman is working away from the top position though.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gruberman wants to lay and pray for a moment but Myrynen keeps working.
Myrynen is looking for a sweep. Gruberman is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Myrynen can't keep his opponent in guard - Gruberman advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ed Gruberman will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Myrynen changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Gruberman fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Gruberman feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gruberman, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
