Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ben Askren! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ryan Jaquez! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jaquez scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Askren is trying hard to land a takedown here. Jaquez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Askren tries for a takedown but Jaquez sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Askren shoots in looking for a takedown but Jaquez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Askren's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ben Askren. That's going to take a lot out of him. Askren dives in and scores a takedown into Jaquez's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Jaquez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Jaquez keeping moving, preventing Askren from controlling successfully. Askren postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Askren has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Askren throwing strikes but missing. Jaquez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Jaquez wants to stand and escape but Askren is having none of it. Jaquez is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Askren with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Askren passes easily into side control. Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jaquez takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Askren is trying to get an arm triangle but Jaquez is defending well. Askren scoring with punches from side control. Askren cracks Jaquez with a big elbow. Askren working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Askren tries to move to mount but Jaquez blocks the move with his legs. Askren is trying to get an arm triangle but Jaquez is defending well. Askren lands a nice forearm strike.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jaquez takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Jaquez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Askren. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Jaquez bucks up and tries to throw Askren off but instead Askren has got his back! Askren is loading up with his shots from the back and Jaquez is in big trouble! Jaquez taps out to strikes and the fight is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:38 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Ben Askren! Ben Askren decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
