PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jason Atkinson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Samuel Gavala (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Atkinson comes into the arena with Fireproof blaring out of the sound system. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jason Atkinson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Samuel Gavala!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Atkinson blocks a jab.
Atkinson fails with a takedown attempt.
Gavala misses with a series of wild punches.
Gavala shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Atkinson but Atkinson pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Gavala moves out of range as Atkinson throws a body kick.

Atkinson darts in and clinches Gavala up against the cage.
Atkinson goes for a takedown attempt but Gavala pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Gavala tries to close the distance and clinch up but Atkinson swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Atkinson shoots in looking for a takedown but Gavala manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Atkinson's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jason Atkinson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gavala shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Atkinson counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gavala trying to hold on to Atkinson's head to control him but Atkinson postures up.
Atkinson seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Atkinson is looking for a kimura here.
Gavala tries to roll over but Atkinson keeps him under control.

Atkinson is working for a submission of some sort.
Gavala tries to get to full guard but Atkinson has control of the leg.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gavala controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.

Atkinson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gavala defends it well.
Atkinson is thwarting Gavala's attempts to control the position.

Gavala pushes Atkinson off and gets back to his feet.
Gavala throws a right hand that Atkinson ducks under and follows up with a left that Atkinson also avoids with ease.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Atkinson connects with a high kick.
The fighters circling - Gavala throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Atkinson moves in looking to clinch but Gavala pushes him off.
Gavala tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Atkinson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Atkinson stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Atkinson gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Gavala wants a takedown.
Gavala fails to pull guard.
Atkinson goes for a takedown attempt but Gavala pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Gavala keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gavala shoots and misses

and Atkinson counters with a takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gavala looks winded!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Atkinson trying to control the position but Gavala is working away.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Atkinson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gavala is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Atkinson tries to move to full mount but Gavala actually manages to regain half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Atkinson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gavala defends it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Atkinson dominated that round.
That's time! Atkinson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Gavala tries to clinch there but Atkinson circles away.

Atkinson dives in and scores a takedown into Gavala's guard.
Gavala not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Gavala keeping moving, preventing Atkinson from controlling successfully.

Gavala is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gavala trying to control the position.
Atkinson wants to control from the top but Gavala keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gavala looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Atkinson passes into side control.
Atkinson tries to move to mount but Gavala blocks the move with his legs.

Atkinson goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Gavala has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Atkinson but great work by Gavala.
Gavala has control of an arm but Atkinson manages to advance to Gavala's back!

Atkinson sinks in the hooks and is looking for the choke. He's got it! Gavala taps out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jason Atkinson!
Jason Atkinson decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
