PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between William Barker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leandro Podogo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barker comes to the cage accompanied by The Way of the Fist - Five Finger Death Punch. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, William Barker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Leandro Podogo!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Podogo fails to land with a series of punches.

Barker fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Podogo sprawls well initially but Barker persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Podogo is staying active underneath Barker, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Podogo is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Barker pulls his head out easily.
Barker wants to lay and pray for a moment but Podogo keeps working.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Barker in particular looking to stall.

Podogo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Podogo has his foot on Barker's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barker works his way back into a safe position though.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Barker lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Podogo is working to get back to half guard.
Podogo is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Podogo keeps the fight on the outside.
Podogo throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Barker moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Podogo misses the shot to the body.
Barker throws the kick towards the body but Podogo avoids it.

Barker throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Podogo closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Barker working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Podogo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Podogo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Podogo is trying to control. Barker wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Podogo content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Barker has locked up a guillotine! Barker's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Podogo is holding on here and Barker must be using up a lot of energy. Podogo has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Barker gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). William Barker!
William Barker decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
