Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Vili Vilperi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sami Kapanen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Vili Vilperi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sami Kapanen!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kapanen changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vilperi looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Kapanen moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Kapanen is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vilperi has escaped the position, nice work there.
Kapanen is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

You can see the frustration on Vilperi's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Vilperi wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Vilperi gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Kapanen scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Kapanen tries to pass the half guard into mount. Vilperi knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Kapanen content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Vilperi is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Kapanen is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Let's hope that Kapanen has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Sami Kapanen.
Vilperi fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kapanen avoids it really well and circles away.

Kapanen clinches up with Vilperi and pushes him back against the cage.

Kapanen has Vilperi pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Kapanen pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Vilperi tumbling to the mat - Kapanen dives into Vilperi's guard.
Kapanen wants to pass the guard but Vilperi is keeping the position.

Vilperi is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Vilperi throws his legs up looking for a submission but Kapanen uses it to pass to side control.
Vilperi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kapanen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Kapanen tries for a kimura but Vilperi is defending well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Vilperi is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sami Kapanen dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Kapanen takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Vilperi avoids the head kick by Kapanen.

Kapanen shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Kapanen was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Sami Kapanen has got the better of the ground game so far.

Kapanen working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Vilperi wants to control but Kapanen is having none of it.

Vilperi is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Kapanen sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

Vilperi is desperately trying to improve his position but Kapanen has a good base and remains in mount.

Kapanen is looking to work his way around to Vilperi's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
The referee warns Vilperi that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Sami Kapanen.

Kapanen closes the distance and clinches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sami Kapanen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



Kapanen closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Vilperi's guard.

Vilperi will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Kapanen is working Vilperi over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Kapanen looking to sit in guard and control but Vilperi gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Kapanen is pulling down on Vilperi's head. It's preventing any offense from Vilperi, at least for the moment.

Kapanen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Vilperi gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Kapanen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vilperi's guard.

Vilperi doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Kapanen is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Vilperi is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Vilperi has escaped and now he's on top!
Kapanen is pulling down on Vilperi's head. It's preventing any offense from Vilperi, at least for the moment.

Vilperi is looking to stand up but Kapanen won't let him.
Kapanen lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Vilperi!

Vilperi is squirming around, avoiding Kapanen's attempts to control the action.

And that's the end of the fight!
Sami Kapanen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kapanen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
