PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Suave Ripkin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ewan Turnbull (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Suave Ripkin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ewan Turnbull!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turnbull throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ripkin's waist but Ripkin gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Turnbull off to one side.
Ripkin shoots in looking for a takedown. Turnbull tries to sprawl out of it but Ripkin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Turnbull manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Ripkin looking to score a takedown here. Turnbull is defending well but Ripkin drives through and ends up in Turnbull's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ripkin wants to control from the top but Turnbull keeps moving.
Ripkin missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Ripkin drops back, looking for a kneebar! Turnbull looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Turnbull looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Turnbull!
Turnbull is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Turnbull decides to take the fight back to the feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Ripkin looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Ripkin looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Ripkin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Turnbull is just riding it out for now. Ripkin eventually gives up the hold.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ripkin is looking for a kimura here.

Ripkin is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Turnbull has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ripkin prevents Turnbull from standing back up.
Ripkin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Turnbull's head.
Turnbull wants to get back to his feet.

Ripkin is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Turnbull is refusing to be controlled, as Ripkin sits in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Turnbull won't allow Ripkin to pass to mount.
Ripkin throwing shots but Turnbull is blocking nicely.

Ripkin is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Turnbull is looking to escape.
Ripkin wants to control but Turnbull is keeping him busy.
Turnbull really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ripkin. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Turnbull tries to kick Ripkin off but Ripkin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Ripkin is looking for a kimura here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Suave Ripkin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Horrible takedown by Ripkin or perhaps it was just good defense by Turnbull which made him look bad.
Turnbull shoots in for a takedown but Ripkin shows good takedown defense.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Turnbull slaps away a takedown attempt from Ripkin, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Ripkin drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Ripkin is trying to get an arm triangle but Turnbull is defending well.

Ripkin goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Turnbull has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Ripkin but great work by Turnbull.

Turnbull decides to stand back up.
Turnbull is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ripkin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Turnbull shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ripkin as he jumps to the side.
Suave Ripkin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ewan Turnbull.

Turnbull fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Ripkin to the ground. Turnbull is now in Ripkin's guard.
Suave Ripkin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Ripkin is trying to control the position from the bottom.

We're going to have a standup here because Suave Ripkin wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Turnbull closes this distance looking for a takedown but Ripkin circles away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Ripkin manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Turnbull on his heels. He'll look to pass Turnbull's guard now, I'm sure.
Ripkin pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Turnbull is keeping the position for now.
Ripkin is looking to work some ground and pound but Turnbull has wrist control.

Ripkin drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Turnbull dives on top into guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Ripkin not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Suave Ripkin just wasn't active enough.
Ripkin keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Turnbull gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Ripkin might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Ripkin wants to control from the top but Turnbull keeps moving.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Ripkin sitting in guard, not really doing much.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Suave Ripkin dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Ripkin gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Turnbull counters with a takedown into side control.

Turnbull stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Suave Ripkin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ripkin feints a jab promting Turnbull to slip. Ripkin then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Turnbull slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Ripkin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Turnbull as he jumps to the side.
No luck for Ripkin with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Suave Ripkin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Turnbull.

so Ripkin counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Ripkin postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Turnbull is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ripkin, into his guard.

Ripkin is looking for a triangle here but Turnbull uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

You can see the frustration on Ripkin's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Turnbull wants to stand but Ripkin is controlling his arm.

Ripkin tries to improve position but can't.
Ripkin is working hard here to advance position.
Ewan Turnbull has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Turnbull decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Turnbull stuffs the takedown attempt from Ripkin. Ripkin gets slowly back to his feet.
Ripkin misses with a takedown attempt - Turnbull sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ripkin.
Ripkin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Turnbull but Turnbull pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Suave Ripkin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Ripkin stuffs the takedown.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Turnbull feints and as Ripkin raises his hands in defense, Turnbull changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ewan Turnbull comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ripkin has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
