Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Don Piano! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Drew Alvarado! The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, William Peck and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alvarado connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
It looks like Don Piano has been cut. Piano keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Alvarado. Alvarado bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick. Alvarado stuffs the takedown. Piano on the wrong end of a nice hook. Alvarado walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Piano drives through with a takedown into guard. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Piano advances to half guard. Piano throwing shots but Alvarado is blocking nicely. Alvarado looks like he's trying to stand up.
Piano throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Alvarado avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Piano. Piano passes the guard and advances to mount!
That's one minute gone in the round. Piano lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Alvarado is squirming around, avoiding Piano's attempts to control the action. Piano misses with a head shot. Piano with the ground and pound from mount.
It looks like Drew Alvarado has been cut. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Piano takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Alvarado really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Piano. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Piano working for a submission but Alvarado is keeping him at bay.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Alvarado wants to control but Piano is having none of it. Piano can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Alvarado is looking to escape. Piano is really struggling to control Alvarado but he's trying to hold on to the position. Piano is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Alvarado is forced to tap! Great finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Don Piano! Don Piano decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
