PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Arwind Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Machida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Matt Machida was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Arwind Santos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Machida!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Mauricio Rocha and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Machida throws a combination that misses

and Santos counters by moving into the clinch.
Machida can't break the clinch.
Machida tries to circle away but Santos has him pinned against the cage.

Santos pulls guard successfully.
Machida has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Santos is proving hard to escape from.
Machida wants to stand and escape but instead Santos has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Santos controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Santos drops back, looking for a kneebar! Machida looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Machida looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Machida!

Machida wants to stand but Santos is controlling his arm.
Santos gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Machida tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Santos manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Santos tries to clinch there but Machida circles away.
Santos showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Machida.

Machida swats away the attempt to clinch by Santos.

Machida lands a nice shot to the body.
Machida throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Santos gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Machida wants to get back to striking at distance but Santos won't allow it.
A frustrated look appears on Machida's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Santos breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Santos closes the distance and pushes Machida back into the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Santos escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Machida circles away from the clinch attempt.
Machida closes the distance and lands a one-two.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Santos tries to clinch up but Machida circles away and keeps his distance.
Matt Machida is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Machida swats away the attempt to clinch by Santos.
Santos throws a head kick that looked like it stung.


It looks like Matt Machida has been cut.
Machida looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Machida throws out a leg kick but Santos moves out of range and Machida only half commits.
Machida throws a sloppy head kick and Santos moves out of range easily.
Machida closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Santos misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Machida misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Santos.

Machida gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Santos to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Santos trying to control the position from guard on top but Machida is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Santos seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Arwind Santos will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Matt Machida's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Machida tries to bum rush Santos with a series of wild strikes but Santos uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Machida tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Santos was well out of range. Poor timing from Machida.
Machida rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Santos moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Machida avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Machida throws a leg kick which misses Santos's front leg but catches the back leg as Santos tries to avoid it.

Santos pulls guard effortlessly.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Santos bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Machida's guard.
Santos slips nicely into half guard.

Santos is trying to work for a kimura but Machida is defending well.

Santos stands up from half guard.

Santos clinches up against the cage.
Machida wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Santos has him pressed against the cage.

Santos breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Santos tries to clinch but Machida is having none of it.
Santos ducks under a wild hook from Machida.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Machida.

Machida connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Machida throws a right hand that Santos ducks under and follows up with a left that Santos also avoids with ease.
Arwind Santos is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Santos avoids a kick to the body.
Machida fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Machida misses with a two punch combination.
Machida is breathing heavily.

Santos has closed the distance and engaged Machida in a clinch.

Machida throws a head kick but Santos moves out of range.
Matt Machida seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Santos pushes Machida up against the cage in a clinch.

Santos's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Matt Machida seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Santos changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Machida looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Santos in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Arwind Santos overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Santos is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Machida knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Santos looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Santos decides to stand back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Machida wants to break free but Santos has control.

Santos throws a series of punches but Machida avoids them all with ease.

Machida throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Santos closes this distance looking for a takedown but Machida circles away.

A big left from Machida misses.
Machida throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Santos fails in his attempt to clinch.

Santos gets a clinch.
Machida tries to break free but Santos pushes him back against the cage.

Santos turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Machida parries the strikes from Santos easily there. Santos is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Machida to escape.
Machida takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Santos is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Machida has escaped the position, nice work there.
Santos misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Machida is not content to let Santos control the position.

Santos is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Machida is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Santos stands up and beckons Machida to his feet.
Matt Machida has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Santos fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Machida, pushing him back against the cage.
Machida takes a knee to the side of the body.
Santos keeps control of Machida as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Machida wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Santos escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Santos uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Machida.
A jab from Machida misses.
Santos tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Machida paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Santos closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Machida did well to prevent Santos getting side control.

Machida actively working from the bottom here.
Santos works his foot free and advances to mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Machida wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Santos.

And that's the end of the fight!
Arwind Santos showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Santos, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
