PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ukko Pekka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Monsoon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jeff Monsoon was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ukko Pekka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jeff Monsoon!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pekka clinches with his opponent.

Pekka breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Pekka shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Monsoon closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Monsoon goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Pekka has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Monsoon but great work by Pekka.
Monsoon is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Pekka stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Pekka shoots for a double leg takedown but Monsoon sprawls well. He's pushed Pekka's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Monsoon is working for an americana but Pekka has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Monsoon was thinking about the submission.

Monsoon wants to work for an arm triangle but Pekka is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Monsoon is working for a kimura here but Pekka manages to reverse the position and he's now in Monsoon's guard.

Pekka drops back looking for a leg! Monsoon is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Monsoon manages to kick Pekka off! Pekka jumps back into Monsoon's guard.

Monsoon has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pekka is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Monsoon.
Monsoon should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Pekka thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Pekka is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Monsoon is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Monsoon is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Pekka's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Monsoon tries to roll over but Pekka keeps him under control.

Monsoon is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pekka's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pekka's back!

Pekka is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Pekka is having to fend off submission attempts from Monsoon, who is looking to sink in the choke. Monsoon doesn't have the hooks in though and Pekka manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.
Pekka works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Monsoon is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Pekka pulls his head out easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Monsoon bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pekka's guard.

Monsoon tests Pekka's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Monsoon throws a series of punches but Pekka avoids them all with ease.
Monsoon fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Pekka tries to close the distance and clinch up but Monsoon swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Pekka looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Monsoon bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Pekka's head.

Pekka looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Monsoon drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pekka manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Monsoon has Pekka in his guard.
Pekka wants to get up but he can't break Monsoon's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Pekka thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Pekka stands and throws Monsoon's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Monsoon moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Monsoon is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Pekka jumps into side control!

Pekka has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Pekka tries to clinch up but Monsoon circles away and keeps his distance.
Monsoon on the wrong end of a nice hook.


It looks like Jeff Monsoon has been cut.
Pekka moves in looking to clinch but Monsoon pushes him off.
Pekka fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Monsoon will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Pekka will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Pekka pushes Monsoon up against the cage in a clinch.

Pekka breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Pekka shoots in for a takedown but Monsoon shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ukko Pekka. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pekka shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Monsoon as he avoids it easily.
Monsoon changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Pekka tries to avoid it but Monsoon manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Pekka to the ground. Pekka escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
A big right followed by a crushing left from Pekka knocks Monsoon out cold! Ouch - that one's going to be featured in highlight reels for years to come!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:17 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Ukko Pekka!
