Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Wes Ekwall! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dave Houses! The judges for this bout are Josh West, Micheangelo Fripello and Colin Fray.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ekwall looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Houses gets a double leg takedown into Ekwall's guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Houses postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Ekwall might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Ekwall managing to control the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ekwall is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Ekwall has Houses pulled in close to control his posture. Ekwall throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Houses wants to get up but he can't break Ekwall's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Ekwall looking for a guillotine here but Houses defends easily.
Houses is working Ekwall over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ekwall is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Houses wants to stand but Ekwall has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Ekwall looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
We're going to have a standup here because Wes Ekwall wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Ekwall tries to clinch up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Houses ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Houses throws a head kick but Ekwall moves out of range.
Houses misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Ekwall counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Ekwall. Houses has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Ekwall uses from the top position. Houses is trying to keep Ekwall in close.
Houses is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Ekwall throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Ekwall loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Ekwall cracks Houses with a solid left hand. Houses is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Ekwall is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. This has been an exciting period of action! Ekwall stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Houses swivels though and keeps the full guard. Ekwall working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Houses is rocked!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ekwall stands and steps away. Houses gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Ekwall misses with a body kick. The fight moves into the clinch position. Houses decides to pull guard. Ekwall throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Houses avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Houses wants to stand up but Ekwall is controlling him. Houses is controlling Ekwall's posture. Ekwall gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. No joy there for Houses, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Ekwall clinches.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ekwall pulls guard. Ekwall looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Ekwall lands a good elbow from the bottom. Houses wanted to stand there but Ekwall had control of the position. Houses working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Ekwall looking to hit a scissor sweep but Houses is one step ahead there. Ekwall manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Houses manages to get himself to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Ekwall postures up and lands a big shot to Houses's brow. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Wes Ekwall dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Ekwall looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Houses! Ekwall drops a big elbow. That's hurt Houses! More shots from Ekwall and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Wes Ekwall! A very excited looking Wes Ekwall made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
