Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Squid Ward!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Cheeky Monkey!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Steve Erwin and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ward takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Monkey fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Ward, pushing him back against the cage.
Monkey breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Monkey closes the distance and clinches.
Monkey manages to break the clinch.
Ward fails in his attempt to clinch.
Monkey cracks Ward with a right hand to the side of the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Monkey rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Ward moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Ward throws a leg kick but Monkey sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Ward fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Monkey, pushing him back against the cage.
Monkey lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Monkey prevents the takedown attempt.
Monkey wants to break free but Ward has control.
Monkey breaks the clinch.
Monkey avoids the body shot from Ward.
Monkey takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Squid Ward seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Monkey moves into the clinch.
Monkey is trying to push Ward away but Ward has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Ward has Monkey pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Ward pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Monkey tumbling to the mat - Ward dives into Monkey's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Ward pushing down on Monkey's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Monkey tries to kick Ward off but Ward keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Ward is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Monkey sees it coming and defends easily.
Ward looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Monkey can do anything to dispel that myth.
Ward is looking for a kimura here.
Monkey is trying to stand.
Monkey is not content to let Ward control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ward seems to be working for a kimura but Monkey defends the submission attempt.
Ward maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Monkey could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Ward has cracked it and Monkey is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Ward!
