Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Johnny Branch! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Orlando Munoz! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Munoz tries to close the distance and clinch up but Branch swats him away and circles back towards the center. Johnny Branch seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Branch tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Munoz swivels and escapes. Munoz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Branch takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Munoz moves out of range of the strikes. Branch fails with a takedown attempt. Branch slaps away a takedown attempt from Munoz, before circling back to the center of the mat. No luck for Branch with that takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Branch. That's going to take a lot out of him. Branch with a poor takedown and Munoz counters with a nice double leg into half guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Branch is defending against the submission attempts here by Munoz.
Branch is not content to let Munoz control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Branch looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Branch is looking to escape. Munoz is looking for a kimura here.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Munoz lands a nice short elbow.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Munoz trying to control from half guard but Branch is working away. Munoz missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Munoz is keen to just control but Branch is a slippery customer. Munoz looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Orlando Munoz wasn't active enough on the ground. Munoz tries to clinch but Branch is having none of it. Munoz clinches up against the cage. Branch is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Munoz gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Branch is breathing heavily. Munoz is trying to drag Branch to the mat but Branch just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Munoz manages to pull guard.
Munoz wants to stand and escape but Branch is having none of it. Branch stopping the sweep attempt from Munoz. Munoz controls Branch momentarily but Branch frees himself.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Branch postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Branch knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Munoz on the ground. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Munoz is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Branch throws a big elbow that misses. Branch trying to control the position from guard on top but Munoz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Munoz working a defensive guard here.
Munoz is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Branch preventing the sweep. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Orlando Munoz dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Munoz shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Branch sprawls well. Branch wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Munoz gets slowly back to his feet. Munoz fails with an attempt to clinch.
Branch dodges the punch combination from Munoz.
Munoz closes the distance and clinches. Branch wants to break free but Munoz has control.
Branch is trying to break the clinch but Munoz has him pressed against the cage. Branch is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Munoz to keep the fight standing. Munoz tries to score a body lock takedown but Branch shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Branch tries to work over Munoz's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. Branch throws a punch but it's blocked by Munoz. A frustrated look appears on Branch's face as he tries to break the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Come on Munoz - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Branch jumps guard but Munoz stands there with Branch around his waist. Branch gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Munoz ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Munoz no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Munoz not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Branch controls from within his opponent's guard. Branch loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Branch throws a big right hand that misses. Branch postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Branch throwing strikes but missing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Branch working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Munoz's head. Munoz is trying to control the position but Branch postures up. Branch tries to free his leg and advance position but Munoz is retaining full guard. Branch stopping the sweep attempt from Munoz. Munoz trying to keep a closed guard but Branch is proving a slippery customer.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Branch postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Branch loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Branch prevents Munoz from getting back to his feet. Branch makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Munoz has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Branch off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. Branch drives through with a takedown into Munoz's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Branch is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Munoz has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Branch is looking to defend but Munoz has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Branch! Munoz pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Branch taps out and this one is all over!
