PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jim Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alan Kolodin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jim Steel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Alan Kolodin!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Kenichi Hosakawa and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steel wants to clinch but Kolodin slips to the side

and Kolodin counters with a single leg into guard. Steel didn't expect that.
Steel is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Steel looking to control.
Steel has Kolodin pulled in close to control his posture.
Steel trying to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jim Steel.
Steel closes the distance but Kolodin moves to the side
and Kolodin counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Steel is looking to clinch.
Kolodin shoots in looking for a takedown but Steel manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Kolodin's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Steel tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Kolodin counters with a shoot takedown. Steel fights it but they end up in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kolodin throwing strikes but missing.
Kolodin trying to control the position from guard on top but Steel is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Kolodin postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Steel is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kolodin, into his guard.
Steel trying to stand up but can't free himself from Kolodin's guard.

Kolodin had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Steel defends it easily.
Steel working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Steel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kolodin swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Steel avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Steel would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kolodin looking to control but Steel passes into half guard.
Kolodin regains full guard. Nicely done.

Steel gets to his feet. Kolodin looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Kolodin tries to score a power double leg takedown but Steel sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kolodin somewhat.
Steel tries to clinch up but Kolodin circles away and keeps his distance.

Kolodin tries for a takedown but Steel sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Jim Steel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alan Kolodin.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Kolodin.
Kolodin cracks Steel with a big elbow.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Steel is trying to get back to half guard.
Kolodin in side control, throwing shots but Steel defends.

Kolodin decides to stand up, so the ref orders Steel to his feet.
Steel slaps away a takedown attempt from Kolodin, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Steel fails with an attempt to clinch.

and Kolodin counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Kolodin.

Kolodin avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Kolodin is stalling in the full guard.

Kolodin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Steel tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kolodin laying and praying for a moment but Steel takes advantage and regains half guard.

Kolodin is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Steel knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kolodin on the ground.

Kolodin is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Steel wants to get back to his feet.
Kolodin not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Steel regains full guard. Nicely done.

Kolodin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

That's eight minutes gone in the round.
Kolodin advances to half guard.
Kolodin is trying to control. Steel wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Kolodin throws a strike but Steel avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Kolodin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kolodin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Kolodin passes Steel's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Kolodin moves into full mount! Steel won't be happy about that!
Steel is in a horrible position here. Kolodin smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Kolodin avoids the attempt from Steel to control.
Steel stops Kolodin from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.
Steel tries to lock up and control but Kolodin gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kolodin wants to control the pace but Steel is squirming around nicely.
Steel wants to control but Kolodin is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alan Kolodin dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Kolodin scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Steel is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kolodin is controlling him.

Kolodin wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Kolodin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Steel as he avoids it easily.
Steel tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Kolodin manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kolodin shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Steel defends it nicely.
Steel is looking to clinch but Kolodin is avoiding it.

Kolodin tries for a takedown but Steel sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

and Kolodin counters with a nice double leg into side control. Steel won't be happy with that.

Kolodin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Steel keeps working.
Steel tries to escape but Kolodin is in control.

Kolodin is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Steel knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Kolodin wants to control for a moment but Steel uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

Kolodin passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Steel!

Kolodin lands a nice shot to the head.

Kolodin looking for a guillotine from mount but Steel is having none of it.
Kolodin trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Kolodin moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Steel has worked his arm free - good work by Steel!
Steel is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Kolodin asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Kolodin working the ground and pound but Steel is defending the strikes.
Kolodin works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Kolodin is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Steel is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kolodin is looking to take a break and control but Steel is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Kolodin is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Steel is trying to escape and Kolodin transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Steel is forced to tap! Nice work there by Kolodin! Very nice indeed!
