PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tyson Lawrence (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Russell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tyson Lawrence!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Diego Russell!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Roger Salmon and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Russell shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Lawrence is trying to defend but Russell finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Russell not doing much here.
Lawrence tries to get to full guard but Russell has control of the leg.
Russell perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Lawrence tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Lawrence punching from the bottom.
Russell keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Diego Russell.

Russell shoots in and gets a takedown into Lawrence's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Russell wants to pass the guard but Lawrence is keeping the position.
Russell cracks Lawrence with a solid left hand.
Lawrence keeping full guard, as Russell tries to pass.

Lawrence working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Russell doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Russell manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Russell is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Lawrence has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Lawrence is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Lawrence looking to hit a scissor sweep but Russell is one step ahead there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Russell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
It looks like Russell might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Tyson Lawrence just wasn't active enough.
Russell fails with a takedown attempt.
Donk. Lawrence catches Russell right on the button with a cross.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Russell gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Lawrence counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Russell thinking.

Russell gets caught flat footed, as Lawrence shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Lawrence prevents Russell from getting back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lawrence is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Russell avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Lawrence wants to control from the top but Russell keeps moving.
Russell is looking to stand back up but Lawrence counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Russell.
Russell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lawrence. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Russell is trying to stand.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lawrence throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Lawrence uses his free foot to push down on Russell's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Russell.
Russell is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Russell looks winded!
Lawrence takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
You get the feeling that Russell really doesn't like being in this position too much.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lawrence with a couple of short strikes.
You get the feeling that Russell really doesn't like being in this position too much.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Diego Russell will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Lawrence fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Russell, pushing him back against the cage.

Lawrence jumps guard.

Lawrence escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Russell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Russell tries to free his leg and advance position but Lawrence is retaining full guard.
Russell postures up.
Russell controls from within his opponent's guard.
Lawrence looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Russell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Lawrence keeping moving, preventing Russell from controlling successfully.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Diego Russell.
Lawrence defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Russell.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Russell shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Lawrence counters with a nice double leg into side control. Russell won't be happy with that.
Tyson Lawrence overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Lawrence has hold of Russell's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Russell seems comfortable defending it but Lawrence has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Russell is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Russell is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Lawrence couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:20 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Tyson Lawrence!
