PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Royce Master (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aldo comes into the arena with Clique blaring out of the sound system. Master has chosen loss your self as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jose Aldo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Royce Master! The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Sergei Dronov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Aldo looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. The fight stays on the outside here - Master looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Master misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Aldo. Aldo fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Master avoids it really well and circles away. Aldo throws a leg kick
and Master moves into the clinch.
Master gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Aldo regains guard.
Master got a little sloppy there for a moment and Aldo has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Master has managed to get both his arms back between Aldo's legs - danger averted. Master loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Aldo avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Aldo managing to control the position. Aldo not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Master wants to control from the top but Aldo keeps moving. Master really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Aldo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Master being controlled here momentarily.
 The ref stands the fighters back up because Jose Aldo just wasn't active enough. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Master.
Master has closed the distance and engaged Aldo in a clinch.
Aldo jumps into guard, dragging Master to the mat.
Aldo is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Master is in close to Aldo's body, working some short punches and elbows. Master must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Aldo keeping full guard, as Master tries to pass. Aldo trying to control the position here.

Master cracks Aldo with a solid left hand.
Master stands and steps away. Aldo gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Aldo dodges the punch combination from Master.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Master wants to clinch. Aldo tries for a takedown but Master sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jose Aldo. That's going to take a lot out of him. Aldo is breathing heavily. Master shoots in but no luck this time.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Aldo throws a series of punches but Master moves out of range. Master misses with a two punch combination.
Master closes the distance and clinches up with Aldo, looking for a takedown. Master pushes Aldo against the cage but Aldo circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Aldo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Master swats him away and circles back towards the center. Aldo tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Master counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Aldo keeping control of the position. Master lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Master decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up. Master shoots in looking for a takedown but Aldo manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Master's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Aldo shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Master as he avoids it easily. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Master stuffs the takedown.
Aldo closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Master scores a nice knee to the body.
Master's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. A left and a right from Master both land. Nice combination. Master throws a one two combo.
Aldo finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
No luck for Master with that takedown attempt. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Master shoots in looking for a takedown but Aldo manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Master's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Aldo has taken the fight to the clinch.
And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.
Royce Master dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Aldo shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Master pinned against the cage. Master gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Aldo closes the distance and clinches up with Master, looking for a takedown. Aldo pushes Master against the cage but Master circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Aldo tries to clinch up but Master circles away and keeps his distance. Horrible takedown by Aldo or perhaps it was just good defense by Master which made him look bad. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jose Aldo. That's going to take a lot out of him. Aldo shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Master as he jumps to the side. Master shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Aldo sprawls well. Aldo wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Master gets slowly back to his feet.
Aldo tries to keep at a distance but Master has taken the fight into the clinch. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Aldo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Aldo is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Aldo looks for a takedown but Master sprawls well.
Master closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Aldo is trying to control Master's posture but Master avoids it. Master is looking to take a break and control but Aldo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Master scoring with punches from side control. Aldo can't do much from the bottom here.
Master is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Aldo is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Aldo is trying to control Master's posture but Master avoids it. Master postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Aldo wants to control but Master postures up. Master throwing strikes but missing, from side control. The ground and pound from Master seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Aldo parries the strikes from Master easily there. Master is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Aldo to escape.

Master is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Aldo knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Master lands a nice forearm strike. Master is chipping away with strikes.

Master drives through with a takedown into Aldo's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Master postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Aldo looking to control.
Aldo is really struggling to control Master but he's trying to hold on to the position. Master stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Aldo swivels though and keeps the full guard. Royce Master has got the better of the ground game so far. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Master with a flurry of punches that miss.

Royce Master showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's time! Aldo's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Master throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. A frustrated look appears on Master's face as he tries to break the clinch. Master lands a glancing elbow in the clinch. Master tries to score a body lock takedown but Aldo shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Master tries to pull guard but Aldo won't allow it.
Jose Aldo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Royce Master. Aldo tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Master smiles and moves away.
Horrible takedown by Master or perhaps it was just good defense by Aldo which made him look bad. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Aldo shoots and misses and Master counters with a three punch combo that has Aldo backing up. Aldo nods at Master to acknowledge the strikes. Master tries to close the distance and clinch up but Aldo swats him away and circles back towards the center. Aldo misses with a double jab
and Master counters by clinching up. Master wants to break free but Aldo has control.
Aldo gets control of Master's arms and successfully pulls guard. Aldo will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Aldo is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Aldo is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched. Master tries to pull guard but Aldo won't allow it.

 That's two minutes gone in the round. Aldo goes for a takedown attempt but Master pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Aldo tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Master manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Master avoids the head kick by Aldo.

Master tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Master shoots in for a takedown but Aldo shows good takedown defense. This has been an exciting period of action! Aldo shoots for a double leg takedown but Master sprawls well. He's pushed Aldo's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Aldo throws a series of punches but Master avoids them all with ease.

The fight stays on the outside here - Aldo looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Aldo does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Master shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Aldo pinned against the cage. Aldo gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Nice takedown defense from Master. No joy for Aldo on that attempt. Aldo shoots in looking for a takedown but Master manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Aldo's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Master shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Aldo tries to close the distance and clinch but Master swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Aldo tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Aldo is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Master lands a jab-cross combination. Aldo tries to clinch up but Master circles away and keeps his distance.

Master gets control of Aldo's arms and successfully pulls guard. Master will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Aldo loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Aldo throws a big right hand that misses. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Aldo drops back, looking for a kneebar! Master looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Master looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Master! Jose Aldo has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! This has been an exciting period of action! Master lands a nice forearm strike.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jose Aldo. Well Master has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality.
