Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Philadelphia Roll! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Samuelson! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Roll swinging wilding here.
Samuelson misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Roll connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. Samuelson blocks a head kick by Roll.
Roll feints and then cracks Samuelson's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Samuelson down. Roll tries to clinch up. Roll is looking to clinch. Roll lets loose with a powerful body kick. Samuelson will feel that in the morning. Some wild striking there from Samuelson.

A head kick misses from Samuelson. Roll feints and then cracks Samuelson's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Samuelson down. Roll connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Roll tries to clinch but Samuelson moves out of range. Samuelson tries for a takedown but Roll sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Roll goes for a spinning back kick but it misses. Roll throws a head kick that misses. Samuelson drives through with a takedown into guard. Roll is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Samuelson stands and steps away. Roll gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Philadelphia Roll seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Roll throws a head kick that misses and Samuelson counters with a straight right hand. Samuelson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Samuelson postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Samuelson creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roll is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Samuelson is controlling him well. Samuelson tries to advance to mount but Roll denies him. The ground and pound from Samuelson seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Roll wants to get back to his feet. Samuelson works to advance to full mount. Roll defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Samuelson jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Roll is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Roll and Samuelson has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Samuelson in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Roll tries to escape but Samuelson is in control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Samuelson works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Samuelson in side control, throwing shots but Roll defends. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
John Samuelson dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Roll lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Roll closes the distance but Samuelson moves to the side and Samuelson counters with a shoot takedown. Roll fights it but they end up in guard. Roll knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Samuelson on the ground. Samuelson passes Roll's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Roll wants to get back to his feet. Samuelson lands with a punch from half guard. Samuelson is nestled in close to Roll, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Samuelson lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Samuelson throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Roll wants to stand back up but Samuelson manages to pass into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Samuelson has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Roll uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Samuelson.
Roll misses with a shot to the body and Samuelson counters with a straight right hand. The fighters circling - Roll throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Roll drops his hands momentarily and Samuelson takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Roll wants to clinch but Samuelson slips to the side and Samuelson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Roll throws a body kick the misses and Samuelson counters with a single leg into guard. Roll didn't expect that.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Samuelson lands a couple of digs. Samuelson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Samuelson postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Samuelson throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Roll works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Samuelson in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Samuelson prevents Roll from getting back to his feet. Samuelson postures up in Roll's guard and throws a big left but Roll blocks it. Samuelson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Samuelson has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Roll is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Samuelson dives into side control.
Roll is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Samuelson misses with a body shot
and Roll counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. A head kick by Roll misses and Samuelson counters with a low kick, right behind Roll 's knee. Roll looks to land a combination but Samuelson avoids it well. Roll tries to clinch but fails miserably and Samuelson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Roll! Samuelson putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Roll in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Samuelson postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Roll looks a forlorn figure.

Samuelson is in the full mount, landing strikes. Samuelson breaks from Roll's wrist control and lands an elbow. Roll is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
