Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Andre Ward! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rick Blaine! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, John Kavanagh and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Blaine throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Blaine takes one on the button. Blaine doesn't succeed with the takedown and Ward counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Ward. Ward slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Blaine looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Ward passes into side control.
Ward cracks Blaine with a big right hand but Blaine just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Blaine is working to avoid the ground and pound but Ward connects with a decent elbow. Ward working the ground and pound from side control. Ward lands a decent elbow from side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Blaine trying to remain calm as Ward controls from the top position. Ward is putting a hurting on Blaine here, landing some big shots from side control. Ward in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Blaine is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. You can see the frustration on Blaine's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Ward moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Ward is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Blaine is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Ward stands up. Blaine shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Blaine moves into range and clinches up with Ward. Blaine avoiding damage as Ward throws knees to the body.
Blaine tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Ward just stands there and leans against the cage. Ward pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Ward stuffs the takedown attempt from Blaine. Blaine gets slowly back to his feet. Andre Ward has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Blaine. Blaine gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Ward content to stall in guard here. Ward is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ward drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says Ward as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Blaine screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with Ward! Nice submission victory there!
