Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Michael Bisping! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ricardo Melendez! The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Nard Betker and Daniel Blasius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Melendez takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Bisping throws a body kick but he wasn't in range. Bisping throws a head kick that misses. Melendez has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Melendez there as he acknowledges the shot. Bisping lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
It looks like Ricardo Melendez has been cut. Bisping throws a head kick but Melendez moves out of range.
Melendez looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Bisping throws a leg kick and Melendez counters by moving into the clinch. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Melendez decides to pull guard. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Bisping seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Bisping knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Melendez on the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round. Melendez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Bisping wants to stand and escape but instead Melendez has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Melendez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Bisping seems keen to control Melendez's posture. Melendez pushes down on Bisping's leg and manages to get into half guard. Bisping is defending against the submission attempts here by Melendez.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Melendez is working for a submission of some sort.
Melendez prevents Bisping from improving his position. Melendez uses his free foot to push down on Bisping's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Bisping. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Melendez looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Melendez is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Bisping has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Bisping is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Melendez locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Bisping is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Ricardo Melendez!
