The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russel staying out of range there.
A big left from Thiago misses.
Thiago throws a hook to the side of Russel's head but Russel sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Russel gets a double leg takedown into Thiago's guard.
Russel wants to control from the top but Thiago keeps moving.

Thiago looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Russel throws a big elbow that misses.
Russel postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Russel is pushing down on Thiago's leg trying to pass to half guard. Thiago is fighting to maintain full guard but Russel has managed to sneak the leg through.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Russel accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Russel would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Thiago throws an ugly left hook that misses
enabling Russel to counter with a crisp jab.

Russel bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Thiago managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Russel.
Thiago is trying to improve his position.

Thiago is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Russel postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Russel is sitting in close to Thiago's body. Thiago has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Russel is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Russel is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Thiago.

Fabricio Thiago decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
