And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steel Penn!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Eddie Farnsworth and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn with a poor takedown
and Penn takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Penn dives in and grabs Rua's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rua pushes down on Penn's head and hops out.
Steel Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Penn decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Rua looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Penn throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Penn has eaten all the pies!
Rua is refusing to be controlled, as Penn sits in half guard.

Rua wants to sweep here but Penn controlling him for the moment.

Rua is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Penn trying to control but Rua is working from the bottom.

Rua throws his legs up looking for a submission but Penn uses it to pass to side control.

Penn lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Penn is trying to get an arm triangle but Rua is defending well.
Rua dodges the ground and pound from Penn.
You can see the frustration on Rua's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rua is not content to let Penn control the position.
Rua struggling a bit here.

Rua manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Penn tries to roll over but Rua keeps him under control.
Penn gets back to full guard.

Penn looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rua postures up in Penn's guard and throws a big left but Penn blocks it.

Penn had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rua defends it easily.
Rua loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Penn trying to keep a closed guard but Rua is proving a slippery customer.
Rua not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Penn wants to improve his position but instead Rua has moved into half guard.
Penn slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Penn has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rua can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Rua throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Rua throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Penn works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Rua controlling from the top position.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Penn holds on and takes a little breather.
Rua cracks Penn with a solid left hand.
Rua looking to pass the guard.

Rua thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Rua with a flurry of punches that miss.

Penn throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Penn looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rua is one step ahead there.

Penn escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Rua gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Rua wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.

Rua passes Penn's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

That's seven minutes gone in the round.
Rua wants to take a breather but Penn is having none of it.
Rua throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Rua is keen to just control but Penn is a slippery customer.
Rua missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Penn tries to get to full guard but Rua has control of the leg.
Penn keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Rua working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Rua lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Penn is trying to get back to full guard.
Penn is controlling Rua's trapped leg to prevent Rua from advancing to side control.
Penn is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Penn wants to sweep but Rua has passed to side control!
Rua in side control, throwing shots but Penn defends.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Penn looks to move to half guard but instead Rua has passed into mount! Damn!
Penn is looking to improve his position but Rua isn't that keen on the idea.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rua misses with a head shot.
Penn avoids a series of strikes thrown by Rua.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Penn can do anything to dispel that myth.
Rua lands with some strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rickson Rua showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Rua has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
