PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between John Malham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Oji San (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Malham comes into the arena with Poets of the Fall - War blaring out of the sound system. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, John Malham!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Oji San!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Colin Fray and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
San with a body punch. A glancing blow.
San throws the left hand but Malham avoids the punch easily.
Oji San seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
San misses with a wild body shot.
San's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Malham connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! San scrambles back to his feet.
Malham misses with a head kick.
Malham throws a low kick but San avoids it.
Malham has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from San finds it's way round the side to connect with Malham's head.
The fight stays on the outside here - San looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Malham throws out a loose jab but San uses good head movement to avoid it.
Malham chopping away at his opponent's legs.
San lands a jab.
Malham misses the shot to the body.
Malham lands a two punch combo.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
San misses with a low kick.
San dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Malham. That did some damage!
Malham thuds his shin into the meat of San's side.

San throws a low kick but Malham moves out of range easily.
San fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Malham manages to avoid it.

Malham tries to keep at a distance but San has taken the fight into the clinch.
San can't find room to land a body shot as Malham controls the action.
A left hand lands to the body for Malham.
San tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Malham pulls guard effortlessly.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Malham looking to control but San passes into half guard.
Malham makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Malham.

Malham looking for a guillotine here but San defends easily.

Malham is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. San is aware though and is defending well.

Malham controls San momentarily but San frees himself.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Malham working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. San doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. San manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Malham not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
San tries to stand but Malham is controlling from the bottom.
Malham seems keen to control San's posture.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Malham takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
San walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Malham checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
San cracks a nice hook into Malham's ribs.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
San swings for the body but Malham moves out of range.
San connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
San lands a slapping body shot.
San on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Malham. Malham obviously looking to wear him down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that John Malham will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Malham takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Malham slips under a jab from San.
San connects with a solid leg kick.
San scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
San walks into a stiff left hand from Malham.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by San.
San lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Malham moves out of range of the strikes.
Malham throws the kick towards the body but San avoids it.
San uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Malham.
San stuffs the takedown.
San swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Malham makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
San misses with a straight left.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

San walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
San takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

San throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
San slips a straight right by Malham.

Malham pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Malham fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
San throws a hook but Malham avoids it easily.
Malham turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
San tries to clinch up but Malham circles away and keeps his distance.

A bone on bone clash there as Malham blocks the leg kick.
San throws a lazy right hand but Malham sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Oji San seems to be getting the better of the standup.

No joy there for Malham, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
San throws out a powerful jab.

Malham wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
A big right from San misses.
Malham takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

San wants to clinch up but Malham keeps it at a distance.
Malham avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Malham shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches San napping and manages to drive through into side control!

This has been an exciting period of action!

Malham is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Malham escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. San gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Oji San will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

San shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

San has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from San there as he acknowledges the shot.
San tries to close the distance and clinch up but Malham swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A punch lands to the side of Malham 's head but he takes it in his stride.
San scores with a jab. Malham acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Malham walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Oh Malham is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Malham lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Malham seems to have got his legs back now.
San throws a looping overhand right but Malham ducks down to avoid it.
San feints and then cracks Malham's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Malham down.
Malham attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Malham gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.

Ouch! a nice leg kick from San, right into the meat.
Malham looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
San tries to close the distance and clinch but Malham swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Malham throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
San keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Malham throws an overhand right that lands on San's shoulder, as San tries to avoid the shot.
Malham drops his hands momentarily and San takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
San's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.

San swings for the body but Malham moves out of range.

Malham fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and San has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Malham bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

San rushes Malham and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Oji San comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think San has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
