Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Eli Bernstein! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, John Diaz! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bernstein feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Diaz's calf. Diaz ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Bernstein misses with a few strikes there.
Diaz chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Bernstein can pounce on him.
Diaz throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Bernstein tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Diaz is in Bernstein's guard. Bernstein controlling the position. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Diaz stands and throws Bernstein's legs to the side, diving into side control. Bernstein wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Bernstein is trying to improve his position. Diaz wants to control but Bernstein is keeping him busy.
That's one minute gone in the round. Diaz wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Bernstein, who protects the arm well. Diaz tries to move into full mount but can't pass Bernstein's legs. Bernstein knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Diaz on the ground. Bernstein is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Diaz is controlling him well. Bernstein is not content to let Diaz control the position. Diaz is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bernstein has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Diaz stands up and beckons Bernstein to his feet. Nice sprawl there from Bernstein as Diaz shoots in. Diaz fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Bernstein misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Bernstein tries to bum rush Diaz with a series of wild strikes but Diaz uses good footwork to avoid the assault. A good leg kick by Bernstein. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Diaz keeps the fight on the outside. A right-left combo lands from Bernstein.
It looks like John Diaz has been cut. Diaz looks winded! Bernstein with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
A combination from Bernstein does no damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Diaz shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Bernstein is trying to defend but Diaz finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Bernstein tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Diaz prevents Bernstein from standing back up.
Diaz tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bernstein knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Bernstein desperately trying to maintain half guard. Bernstein wants to control but Diaz passes into side.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Diaz stands up and beckons Bernstein to his feet. Diaz circles away from the clinch attempt.
Bernstein throws a sloppy head kick and Diaz moves out of range easily. Diaz doesn't succeed with the takedown and Bernstein counters with a head kick that drops Diaz to the mat! Diaz scrambles across the canvas and gets back to his feet, still wobbly! Eli Bernstein has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Diaz. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Diaz gets hit by the mother of all head kicks and drops to the canvas in a crumpled heap! Woooow, the Internet is going to be talking about this one for weeks!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:46 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Eli Bernstein! After the fight, Eli Bernstein was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
