PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kade Edgar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Evan Rickels (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Edgar kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Undead. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kade Edgar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Evan Rickels!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rickels shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Edgar's guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Edgar manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rickels manages to get himself to full guard.
Edgar won't allow Rickels to get back to his feet.
Edgar throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Rickels preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Edgar prevents Rickels from getting back to his feet.
Edgar will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Edgar postures up in Rickels's guard and throws a big left but Rickels blocks it.
Rickels wants to stand but Edgar is controlling the position.

Rickels throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Edgar trying to control the position from guard on top but Rickels is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Edgar throws a big right hand that misses.
Edgar scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Rickels can do anything to dispel that myth.
Rickels keeping moving, preventing Edgar from controlling successfully.
Edgar has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Edgar won't allow Rickels to get back to his feet.

Edgar wants to control from the top but Rickels keeps moving.

We're going to have a standup here because Kade Edgar wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Rickels keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Rickels has managed to clinch.

Evan Rickels seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rickels drives through and clinches with Edgar against the cage.
Rickels lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Edgar backwards.
Rickels throws a punch but it's blocked by Edgar.

Rickels decides to pull guard.
Rickels is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Edgar cracks Rickels with a solid left hand.
Edgar passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Rickels is trying to get back to half guard.
Rickels looks winded!

Rickels dodges the ground and pound from Edgar.

Edgar decides to stand back up. Edgar steps back and let's Rickels get back to his feet.

Edgar gets a takedown into half guard.
Edgar is taking a breather. Rickels says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
This has been an exciting period of action!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Edgar throwing shots but Rickels is blocking nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kade Edgar will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Rickels shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

and Rickels counters with a takedown into side control.
Rickels with the ground and pound but Edgar regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Edgar is staying active underneath Rickels, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Rickels throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Edgar to regain full guard.
Rickels really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Edgar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Edgar manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Kade Edgar is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Rickels forces Edgar back against the cage and clinches.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Edgar wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Rickels has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Edgar avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Rickels has a couple of punches blocked by Edgar.

Rickels goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Edgar is trying to break the clinch but Rickels is controlling him.
Edgar misses with a hook to the ribs.

Rickels gets control of Edgar's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rickels will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Edgar thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Edgar stays in close to Rickels's body and controls the position.

Rickels wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Edgar is now in half guard.

Edgar pulls Rickels in close to prevent any damage.

Rickels cracks Edgar with a solid left hand.
Rickels lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Edgar wants to sweep here but Rickels controlling him for the moment.
Rickels tries to stand but Edgar is controlling from the bottom.
Rickels loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Edgar really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Rickels is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Evan Rickels showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Rickels throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Edgar tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rickels is in Edgar's guard.
Edgar wants to get back to his feet but Rickels is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Rickels sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Edgar is keen to just control but Rickels is a slippery customer.

Rickels shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Edgar as he avoids it easily.

Edgar closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Edgar stops Rickels from getting back to his feet.

Edgar stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Edgar tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rickels swivels and escapes.
Rickels shoots in for a double leg but Edgar sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Kade Edgar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Evan Rickels.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Rickels is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Evan Rickels was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Edgar can't get the takedown.
Rickels misses with a knee strike.
Edgar stops a takedown attempt from Rickels.
Rickels misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Edgar.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

I would just about give that final round to Evan Rickels.
Well Rickels has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
