PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Dave Gahan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Punch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Punch comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Get Knocked Out kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 12 - 1, fighting out of London, Dave Gahan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 16 - 1, fighting out of London, Ray Punch!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Andrew Berry and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gahan throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Punch.
Punch displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gahan.

Punch tries to keep at a distance but Gahan has taken the fight into the clinch.
Punch wants a takedown but no success here.

Punch's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Gahan keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Gahan wants to clinch up but Punch keeps it at a distance.

Gahan feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Punch wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Punch is looking to stand up but Gahan isn't so interested in that idea.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Ray Punch hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Punch keeps the fight on the outside.
Gahan shoots for a double leg takedown but Punch sprawls well. He's pushed Gahan's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Gahan tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Punch manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Gahan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Punch as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dave Gahan. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Gahan doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Gahan prevents Punch from breaking the clinch.

Punch escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Gahan takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Gahan gets caught napping as Punch dives in and scores a takedown. Gahan manages to retain guard.

We're going to have a standup here because Dave Gahan wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Punch stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Punch wants it to stay on the feet.
Gahan takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Punch looks to score with a jab to the body but Gahan is just out of range.
Gahan tries to bum rush Punch with a series of wild strikes but Punch uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Punch keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
The fight stays on the outside here - Gahan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Punch moves into range and connects with a jab.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Punch's corner calls for a 1-2. Punch obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Punch scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Punch throws a jab when Gahan was well out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Dave Gahan will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Good leg kick by Punch there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Punch lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Punch misses with an uppercut.
Gahan wants to clinch up but Punch keeps it at a distance.

and Gahan decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Punch's guard.
Punch utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gahan wants to control from the top but Punch keeps moving.
Gahan might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gahan accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Gahan wants to control from the top but Punch keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Dave Gahan wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Gahan drives through and clinches with Punch against the cage.

Punch is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Gahan can't fight it off and eventually Punch manages to take the fight to the floor. Gahan looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Punch is looking to work some ground and pound but Gahan has wrist control.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Dave Gahan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Punch is fighting to break Gahan's control of his arms but Gahan is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Punch is looking to stand up but Gahan isn't so interested in that idea.

Punch really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gahan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

No joy there for Gahan, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Punch fails with a takedown attempt.

Gahan tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Gahan throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Punch stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Dave Gahan.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gahan, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
