PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matt Webber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Williams (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Matt Webber has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Matt Webber seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matt Webber!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rick Williams!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Gregory Folan and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Webber drives through and clinches with Williams against the cage.
Webber fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Williams misses with a knee to the head.
Williams tries to pull guard but Webber forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Williams keeps control of Webber as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Webber decides to pull guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Webber seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Webber has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Williams off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Williams gets tackled into the cage by Webber. Webber maintains the clinch.

Williams manages to break the clinch.
Williams has a takedown stuffed.
Webber blocks a head kick by Williams.
Williams looks winded!

Webber clinches up with Williams and pushes him back against the cage.
Williams tries to pull guard but Webber holds him up against the cage and eventually Williams drops back down to his feet.
Matt Webber has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Williams.
Webber wants to break the clinch but can't.
Williams is trying to pull guard but Webber turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Webber jumps guard and drags Williams to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Webber looking to hit a scissor sweep but Williams is one step ahead there.
Williams must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Webber working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Williams doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Williams manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Williams stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Webber swivels though and keeps the full guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Webber is on top in guard.

Webber decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Webber closes the distance and clinches.
Webber is working Williams over against the cage.

Webber pulls guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Webber has his hands on Williams's head, controlling the position.
Webber throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Webber has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Williams can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Webber escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Williams gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Webber wriggles free and stands up.

Webber fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Williams to the ground. Webber is now in Williams's guard.
Webber throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Williams really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Webber. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Webber content to stall in guard here.

Webber stands and steps away. Williams gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Williams checks a leg kick nicely.
Webber shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Williams as he jumps to the side.
Webber shoots in but no luck this time.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nice sprawl there from Williams as Webber shoots in.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Horrible takedown by Webber or perhaps it was just good defense by Williams which made him look bad.
Williams moves to clinch but Webber breaks away
and Webber counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Webber dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Webber has a takedown stuffed.
Webber shoots in for a double leg but Williams sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Williams fails to land with a series of punches.
Webber bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
An inside leg kick from Webber misses.
Williams just misses with a punch to the body.
Williams takes one to the chin there.
Webber misses with a head kick.
Williams tries to clinch up
and Webber counters with a right hand to the body.

Webber has Williams up against the cage in a clinch.
Williams is breathing heavily.

Webber pulls guard effortlessly.
Webber looking to hit a scissor sweep but Williams is one step ahead there.
Williams sitting in guard here, content to control.
Webber is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Rick Williams hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Webber shoots for a double leg takedown but Williams sprawls well. He's pushed Webber's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matt Webber. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Webber throws a head kick that misses

and Williams counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Webber has a closed guard, preventing Williams from standing up.

Webber seems keen to control Williams's posture.
Webber wants to stand up but Williams is controlling him.
Webber wants to sweep but no luck.
Webber is pulling down on Williams's head. It's preventing any offense from Williams, at least for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Matt Webber.
Webber closes this distance looking for a takedown but Williams circles away.

Williams is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Webber.

Williams decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Webber is trying to maintain the position but Williams is very close to passing his half guard.
Williams tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Williams is just content to waste time from the top position. Webber takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Williams is fighting to break Webber's control of his arms but Webber is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

That was a close second round but I would say that Matt Webber will probably get the nod.

Williams keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Williams changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Webber looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Webber misses with an elbow from the bottom.
You can see the frustration on Webber's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Matt Webber overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Webber gets back to half guard.
Williams takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Webber tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Webber has his hands clasped together around Williams's back. He's all about the action.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Webber gets back to full guard.
Webber manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Williams manages to get himself to full guard.

Webber not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Webber misses with a takedown attempt - Williams sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Williams looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Webber moves into the clinch.
Rick Williams has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Matt Webber is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Williams wants to take the fight to the mat but Webber manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matt Webber showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Webber has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
