PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bertrand Paulsen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paddy Mcdonna (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paddy Mcdonna told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Bertrand Paulsen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Paddy Mcdonna!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Aleksandr Martynov and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mcdonna scores with a nice right hand.
Mcdonna fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Mcdonna scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Mcdonna throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Paulsen's waist but Paulsen gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mcdonna off to one side.
Mcdonna throws a head kick that misses

and Paulsen counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Paulsen is working for a kimura but Mcdonna is defending it quite comfortably.
Mcdonna really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Paulsen. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Paulsen is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Mcdonna sees it coming and defends easily.
Mcdonna is trying to stand up here but Paulsen is controlling him well.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Paulsen uses his free foot to push down on Mcdonna's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mcdonna.

Paulsen moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Mcdonna has worked his arm free - good work by Mcdonna!
Mcdonna is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Paulsen asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Mcdonna takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Paulsen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Paulsen is looking to take a break and control but Mcdonna is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The ground and pound from Paulsen seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Paulsen creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Mcdonna sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Paulsen is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mcdonna has escaped the position, nice work there.
Mcdonna is not content to let Paulsen control the position.
Paulsen works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Paulsen misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Mcdonna is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Paulsen has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Paulsen goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Mcdonna rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Paulsen's guard! Nice work there by Mcdonna!

Paulsen is looking for a triangle but Mcdonna pushes his legs off easily.

Paulsen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mcdonna defends it easily.

Paulsen manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Mcdonna's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Paulsen has hold of Mcdonna's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Mcdonna manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Paulsen is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Mcdonna can do to turn this around?
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Paulsen goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Mcdonna turns into him and now he's in Paulsen's guard.

Paulsen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mcdonna tries to avoid it but Paulsen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mcdonna to the ground. Mcdonna escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Mcdonna tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Paulsen tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mcdonna sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Paulsen somewhat.

Paulsen closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mcdonna quickly recovers to half guard.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Paulsen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
