PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Eddie Alvarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Gerald (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Eddie Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul Gerald!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A left and a right from Alvarez both land. Nice combination.
Gerald fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Alvarez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Alvarez lands with a kick to the temple. Gerald shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Gerald closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Alvarez to the mat! Alvarez manages to get full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Alvarez wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Alvarez tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gerald looks gassed!
Alvarez controls Gerald momentarily but Gerald frees himself.
Alvarez looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Gerald must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Alvarez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gerald doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gerald manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Gerald counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Alvarez!

Alvarez manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Gerald thows a huge punch but Alvarez dodges it nicely.

Gerald passes to side control.
Gerald moves into full mount!
Alvarez is desperately trying to improve his position but Gerald has a good base and remains in mount.
Alvarez has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.
Alvarez takes a big shot to the side of the head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Gerald goes for a risky armbar from back mount and it's not paid off. Alvarez escapes and is now in half guard on top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Eddie Alvarez will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Alvarez looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Alvarez tries to stand but can't do so whilst Gerald controls his leg.
Gerald wants to control but Alvarez is keeping busy.
Gerald is breathing heavily.
Gerald might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Alvarez kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Alvarez looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Alvarez slows the pace down in half guard.
Gerald is not content to let Alvarez control the position.
Gerald is looking for a sweep. Alvarez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Alvarez postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Gerald to stand up.

Alvarez scores with a sloppy right hand. Gerald should have avoided that one.

and Gerald counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Gerald thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Gerald wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alvarez keeps working.
Gerald trying to mount his opponent but Alvarez defends it.

Gerald is working for a kimura but Alvarez is defending it quite comfortably.
Alvarez blocking the ground and pound attempt from Gerald.

Gerald passes to side control.
Alvarez is trying to control Gerald's posture but Gerald avoids it.
Gerald trying to control the action but Alvarez is working from the bottom.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Alvarez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Alvarez shoots in and bounces Gerald off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gerald is on top in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Eddie Alvarez dominated that second round.
That's time! Alvarez's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Gerald closes the distance and clinches up with Alvarez, looking for a takedown. Gerald pushes Alvarez against the cage but Alvarez circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Alvarez jumps guard but Gerald stands there with Alvarez around his waist. Alvarez gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Alvarez tries to score a body lock takedown but Gerald shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Alvarez wants to hit a switch here but Gerald passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Alvarez there!

Gerald can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Alvarez is looking to escape.

Alvarez manages to control the position for a moment.
Alvarez wants to control but Gerald is having none of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Gerald throwing strikes here but Alvarez is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Alvarez tries to hold on but Gerald postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Alvarez is looking to improve his position but Gerald isn't that keen on the idea.
Gerald looking to control but Alvarez is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Alvarez is trying to reverse the position but instead Gerald has taken his back - oops!
Alvarez grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gerald gets his hands free as Alvarez looks to control.

Gerald has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Alvarez has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Gerald tries to get the hooks in deep but Alvarez pushed the leg off.
Alvarez looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Gerald trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Paul Gerald has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Alvarez breaks Gerald's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Paul Gerald comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Alvarez has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
