PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Seu Gil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Stones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Seu Gil!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Stones!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Alexandre Firmino and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stones leaves Gil with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Gil fails with a takedown attempt.

Stones darts in and clinches Gil up against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Gil's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Gil gets control of Stones's arms and successfully pulls guard. Gil will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Stones trying to stand up but can't free himself from Gil's guard.
Stones wants to control from the top but Gil keeps moving.

Stones decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Stones darts in trying to clinch

so Gil counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stones looking for a sweep. Not yet Stones, not yet.
Gil trying to control but Stones is working from the bottom.
Gil pushes down on Stones's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Still in half guard, Gil seems content to control.
Stones wants to control but Gil is keeping busy.
Stones is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Gil trying to mount his opponent but Stones defends it.
Stones is looking to improve his position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Stones is refusing to be controlled, as Gil sits in half guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

We're going to have a standup here because Seu Gil wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Gil misses with a wild combination.

Gil gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stones to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Stones trying to control the position from guard on top but Gil is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gil looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gil keeping moving, preventing Stones from controlling successfully.
Gil is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gil is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Gil slows the pace down in half guard.
Gil thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Stones's head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gil works his way into full mount!
Gil lands with some strikes.
Gil lands a big elbow.

Gil goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Stones turns into him and now he's in Gil's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Gil wriggles free and stands up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Seu Gil dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gil shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Stones counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Stones.

Gil wriggles free and stands up.
Stones looks for a takedown but Gil sprawls well.
Stones tries to clinch but Gil moves out of range.
Stones fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gil misses with a takedown attempt - Stones sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Stones throws a leg kick but Gil sees it coming and moves out of range.
Stones throws a sloppy body shot
and Gil counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gil fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Stones sprawls well initially but Gil persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Gil drops an elbow to the side of Stones's head.


Stones is rocked!
Stones wants to control but Gil passes into side.
Stones tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Gil presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Stones is breathing heavily.

Gil gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Stones misses with a takedown

and Gil counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Seu Gil has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Stones.
Gil is leaning against Stones and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gil lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Gil slows down the pace here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gil is trying to trip Stones. He has hold of a leg but Stones is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Gil persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Gil throwing strikes from guard but Stones blocks nicely.
Gil works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Gil is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Gil is landing with some decent strikes but Stones is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Stones in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Gil scoring with strikes but Stones is staying in there.

Gil looking for a guillotine from mount but Stones is having none of it.
Gil controlling from mount.
Gil breaks from Stones's wrist control and lands an elbow.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gil looking to secure an arm triangle but Stones defends it well.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Gil takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Seu Gil dominated that second round.
That's time! Gil's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Gil closes the distance and pushes Stones back into the cage.

Gil has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Stones uses from the top position.
Gil seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Gil looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Stones is defending well. Gil quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Stones has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Gil celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
