PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jonathan Baird (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zach Cady (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jonathan Baird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Zach Cady!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Robert Twigg and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cady shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Baird tries to get to full guard but Cady has control of the leg.
Cady trying to advance position but Baird counters by regaining guard.

Cady thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Cady slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Cady controlling the position from side mount.
Baird knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cady on the ground.
Baird tries to buck Cady off but Cady is having none of it.

Cady takes a little break here. Baird wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
You can see the frustration on Baird's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Cady lands a nice forearm strike.
Baird is looking to reverse the position.

Cady decides to stand back up. Cady steps back and let's Baird get back to his feet.

Cady closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cady lands in his opponent's guard.

Baird on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Baird tries to get out of the position.
Cady works a leg free and moves into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cady stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Baird to get to his feet.
Baird thumps Cady with a low kick.

Cady has managed to clinch.
Baird tries to throw a body punch but Cady avoids it by throwing Baird back against the cage.

Baird jumps guard but Cady stands there with Baird around his waist. Baird gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Cady ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cady no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Cady scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cady misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Cady clinches up with Baird and pushes him back against the cage.

Cady gets control of Baird's arms and successfully pulls guard. Cady will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cady pulls Baird in close to his closed guard and prevents Baird from doing any damage or advancing position.
Cady keeping moving, preventing Baird from controlling successfully.
Cady is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Zach Cady has got the better of the ground game so far.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Cady is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Cady decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Baird, up you get!

Cady defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Baird.

Baird closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Cady manages to escape and get back to his feet!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Cady drags the fight down to the ground.
Baird slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Cady is working to avoid the ground and pound but Baird connects with a decent elbow.

Cady can't do much from the bottom here.

Cady explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Cady tries to clinch there but Baird circles away.
Baird is looking to slow Cady down with leg kicks.
Baird fails with a takedown attempt.

Cady is trying to get an arm triangle but Baird is defending well.
Cady happy to just control the position for now.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cady lands an elbow.

Cady tries for a kimura but Baird is defending well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Baird tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Cady easily slips into full mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zach Cady showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Cady scores with a one two! Baird had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Cady leaves Baird with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Baird tries to clinch up.
Cady fails with an attempt to clinch.

Baird moves into range and clinches up with Cady.
Cady prevents a body shot from Baird.

Cady manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Baird wants to pass the guard but Cady is keeping the position.
Baird is stalling in the full guard.

Cady is pulling down on Baird's head. It's preventing any offense from Baird, at least for the moment.
Cady manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Baird manages to get himself to full guard.

Cady drops back looking for a leg! Baird is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Baird manages to kick Cady off! Cady jumps back into Baird's guard.
Cady tries to free his leg and advance position but Baird is retaining full guard.

Cady controls from within his opponent's guard.
Cady throws a big right hand that misses.
Cady passes Baird's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Cady has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Baird defend it? Cady steps over the head and cranks it - Baird is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Cady!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Zach Cady!
