17 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kenichi Shirahama! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Cruz throws an off balance right hand
and Shirahama counters with a slapping leg kick. Cruz takes a swing at Shirahama's ribcage but misses. Shirahama fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Cruz misses with a hook
and Shirahama counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Cruz wants to get back to his feet.
Shirahama seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. This has been an exciting period of action! Cruz is trying to stand up here but Shirahama is controlling him well. Cruz makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work! Cruz misses with a hook

Cruz throws a hook to the side of Shirahama's head but Shirahama sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Cruz cracks Shirahama with an open hand slap. Shirahama defending well as Cruz loads up on a big left hand. Cruz scoring well with a low kick there.
Cruz throws a leg kick and Shirahama counters with a shoot takedown. Cruz fights it but they end up in guard. Shirahama trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Cruz is looking to stand up but Shirahama isn't so interested in that idea. Shirahama tries to free his leg and advance position but Cruz is retaining full guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Shirahama accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Cruz wants to get back to his feet but Shirahama is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Shirahama trying to control but Cruz is working from the bottom.

Cruz really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Shirahama with a flurry of punches that miss. Shirahama has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Cruz wants to stand up but Shirahama is controlling him. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shirahama looks to land a strike but Cruz avoids it nicely and regains full guard. Great action here. Cruz prevents Shirahama from moving into mount. Cruz is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Shirahama has just dragged him back down to the mat. Shirahama has knee on belly and moves into mount. Cruz tries to buck Shirahama off but he can't manage it. Shirahama lands a nice shot to the head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Shirahama looking to control but Cruz is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Shirahama dominating with strikes here. Cruz's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Shirahama working away from the top, dropping strikes. Cruz is squirming around, avoiding Shirahama's attempts to control the action. Shirahama controlling his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kenichi Shirahama dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Cruz throws a low kick but Shirahama moves out of range easily. Shirahama's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Cruz connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Shirahama scrambles back to his feet. Cruz takes a swing at Shirahama's ribcage but misses. Cruz misses with a hook. Shirahama ducked under it nicely. Cruz lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. Cruz lands a nice hook to Shirahama's body. Shirahama takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shirahama manages to avoid it. Shirahama has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Cruz finds it's way round the side to connect with Shirahama's head. Cruz looks to score with a jab to the body but Shirahama is just out of range. Cruz throws a combination that misses and Shirahama counters with a good, hard body kick but Cruz shrugs it off. Cruz misses with a right hand and Shirahama counters with a left to the body. Cruz missing with a left hand there. Shirahama was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Cruz ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Shirahama moves away. Cruz scores with a jab to the body. Cruz looks to throw the jab but Shirahama is out of range. Cruz on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Shirahama. Shirahama obviously looking to wear him down.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz throws a hook but Shirahama blocks it. A shot to the body from Cruz misses and Shirahama counters with a single leg into guard. Cruz didn't expect that. He's almost out here... but no, Shirahama gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Shirahama wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cruz keeps working. Shirahama is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Cruz taking a bit of punishment here - Shirahama scoring with strikes. Shirahama is working Cruz over with some ground and pound from side control.

Shirahama immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Cruz is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Shirahama!
