Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Henry Durden! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Frankie Edgar! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Ian Loll and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Durden misses with a two punch combination.
Edgar avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Durden tries to close the distance and clinch up but Edgar swats him away and circles back towards the center. Durden tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Edgar counters with a nice double leg into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Durden wants to get back to his feet but Edgar is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Edgar is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Edgar keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Durden's head. Durden on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Durden tries to get out of the position. Edgar stops Durden from standing up. Edgar loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Durden wants to stand and escape but Edgar is having none of it. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Edgar with a flurry of punches that miss. Edgar lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Durden is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Edgar working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Durden is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Edgar is controlling him. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Edgar's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
That's one minute gone in the round. Edgar passes easily into side control. Nice work. Durden is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Edgar has just dragged him back down to the mat. Edgar moves into full mount! Durden in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Durden wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Edgar with shots to the head and body - Durden looks very uncomfortable down there. Edgar lands a big shot there that rocks Durden but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Edgar is landing with some decent strikes but Durden is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Edgar pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. This has been an exciting period of action! Edgar raining down hammerfists from mount. Edgar looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Durden tries to buck Edgar off but he can't manage it. Durden is breathing heavily. Edgar has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Durden is forced to tap!
