Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 4 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Silver Back! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
19 - 13 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vlad Impaler! The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Vladimir Khabensky and Sergei Dronov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Impaler throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Back was covering up waiting for the punch and Impaler finishes the takedown easily into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Back utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Impaler has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Back trying to control the position.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Back avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Impaler trying to control but Back is working from the bottom. Back is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Impaler defends well. Back is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Back is trying to keep Impaler in close.
That's one minute gone in the round. Back is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Impaler is aware though and is defending well. Impaler in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Impaler trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Impaler wants to control from the top but Back keeps moving. Impaler trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Back tries to land a sweep but no joy. Impaler throws a big right hand that misses. Back is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Impaler defends well. Back pulls Impaler in to control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Back looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Impaler wants to control from the top but Back keeps moving. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Impaler slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Impaler tries to score with some ground and pound. Back controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Back manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Impaler throwing shots but Back is blocking nicely. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Impaler missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Impaler is keen to just control but Back is a slippery customer. Impaler throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Back is looking to control Impaler's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Back avoid being mounted?
That's three minutes gone in the round. Impaler throwing shots but Back is blocking nicely. Back on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Impaler wants to take a breather but Back is having none of it. Back wants to control but Impaler is keeping busy and won't allow it. Back looking for submissions off his back. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Impaler lands a nice short elbow. Impaler trying to control the action but Back is working from the bottom. Impaler is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Impaler seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Back does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Back is looking to control Impaler's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Back avoid being mounted? Back regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Impaler. Back controls Impaler momentarily but Impaler frees himself. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Impaler looking to sit in guard and control but Back gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Impaler is looking to sinch up a triangle. Back throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Impaler's body to avoid the submission. Impaler has instead reached around Back's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Impaler arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Vlad Impaler! Vlad Impaler is the new lightweight champion! Vlad Impaler seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
