Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Josh Barnett! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Baldoza! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, George Francis and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Baldoza tries to clinch there but Barnett circles away.
Baldoza misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Nice takedown defense from Baldoza. No joy for Barnett on that attempt. Baldoza lands with a nice body kick. Baldoza throws a nice looking combination but Barnett bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Barnett pushes Baldoza up against the cage in a clinch. Baldoza jumps guard but Barnett turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Baldoza fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Josh Barnett has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wilson Baldoza. Baldoza working aggressively here.
Barnett has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Baldoza clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Barnett is not going to allow Baldoza to sit and survive in this position. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
That's one minute gone in the round. Barnett wants to control but Baldoza is keeping busy. Baldoza tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Barnett is landing with some decent strikes but Baldoza is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Baldoza throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing. Barnett is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Baldoza is forced to tap! Great finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Josh Barnett! A very excited looking Josh Barnett rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
