PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Josh Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damien Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Josh Carter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Damien Maia!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Fedor Mirinova and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carter lands a head kick. Maia smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Maia gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Maia will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Carter up against the cage.

Carter jumps guard and drags Maia to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Maia won't allow Carter to get back to his feet.

Maia gets to his feet - Carter follows without any prompting.
Maia tries to clinch up
and Carter counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Maia is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Carter fails with a takedown attempt.
Carter fails with an attempt to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Maia has closed the distance and engaged Carter in a clinch.

Maia drags the fight down to the ground.
Carter wants to pass the guard but Maia is keeping the position.
Carter wants to stand but Maia has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Carter really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Carter trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Maia looking for a sweep. Not yet Maia, not yet.
Carter looking to pass the guard.
Maia avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Maia is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Carter wants to stand and escape but instead Maia has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Carter has control of Maia's left arm, preventing Maia from doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Maia accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Carter gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Maia moves into the clinch.

Maia gets control of Carter's arms and successfully pulls guard. Maia will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Carter avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Carter pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maia is keeping the position for now.
Maia trying to keep a closed guard but Carter is proving a slippery customer.
Maia wants to sweep but no luck.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Carter wants to stand but Maia has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Maia pulls Carter in close to prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Damien Maia was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Maia gets a double leg takedown into Carter's guard.
Carter keeping full guard, as Maia tries to pass.
Carter knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maia on the ground.
Maia passes into half guard.
Maia thows a huge punch but Carter dodges it nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Maia gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damien Maia dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Maia looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carter wants to sweep but no luck.

Carter is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Maia trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Carter can't keep his opponent in guard - Maia advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Maia is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Maia content just to control the position here.
Maia connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Maia takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Maia get's back to his feet.

Maia drives through with a takedown into Carter's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Maia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Carter swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Maia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Maia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maia is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Maia advances to half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Maia decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Maia throws a hook but Carter avoids it easily.
Maia will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Carter.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Carter shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Maia pinned against the cage. Maia gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Carter tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Maia counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Carter!
Carter working to try and regain half guard.
Maia controlling the position easily from mount.
Carter tries to hold on but Maia pushes him away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Maia moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Carter has worked his arm free - good work by Carter!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Maia decides to stand back up. Maia steps back and let's Carter get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Maia shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Carter's guard.
Maia advances position into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damien Maia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Maia tries to clinch but Carter is having none of it.
Carter tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Maia manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Carter throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.

Carter has managed to clinch.

Maia successfully pulls guard.
Carter trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.
Carter stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maia swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Maia escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Carter avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Maia is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Carter is aware though and is defending well.
Carter trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.
Maia looking to hit a scissor sweep but Carter is one step ahead there.
Maia is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Maia is on top in guard.
Maia wants to control from the top but Carter keeps moving.
Carter tries to strike from the bottom.
Carter will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
No joy there for Maia, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Maia closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Carter to the mat! Carter manages to get full guard.
Carter is looking to stand back up but Maia counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Carter.
Carter is looking to control Maia's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Carter avoid being mounted?
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Carter is not content to let Maia control the position.
Carter wants to improve his position but Maia is controlling well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Carter scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Maia manages to mount him!
Maia tries to control but Carter wriggling away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Maia prevents Carter from getting the reversal.
Josh Carter has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Damien Maia is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Maia takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Damien Maia comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Maia winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
