Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Conrad Ratliff! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Garry Smith! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Alexandre Firmino and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! No joy there for Ratliff, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Smith blocks a head kick by Ratliff.
Smith gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Ratliff counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Ratliff throws a head kick that misses. Ratliff lands with an overhand left. Smith blocks a head kick by Ratliff.
Ratliff throws a head kick but Smith moves out of range.
No joy there for Ratliff, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ratliff goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo. Ratliff clobbers Smith with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. Ratliff throws a hook but Smith blocks it. Ratliff throws a wild combination but nothing lands. A shot to the liver by Ratliff. Beautiful body shot. Smith moves out of range of the body kick. Conrad Ratliff is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Decent striking displayed by Ratliff there. Nice uppercut there from Ratliff. Ratliff is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. Ratliff lands a big head kick that sends Smith tumbling to the mat! Ratliff takes a step backwards and waves Smith back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Smith is rocked! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Ratliff tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Smith is still on wobbly legs! Can Ratliff finish him? Ratliff stuffs the takedown. Smith seems to have recovered his senses. Smith drives through with a takedown into guard. Smith is standing up over Ratliff. Ratliff looks to escape but Smith dives into side control.
Ratliff gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Ratliff has given up his back.
Smith is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Ratliff won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Smith off his unconscious opponent!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Garry Smith! During a confident post fight interview, Garry Smith thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
