These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Bates uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jones.

Jones has taken the fight to the clinch.
Jones is looking to control Bates's arms but Bates gets an underhook and turns him. Now Jones has his back to the cage.
Jones throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Bates blocks it with crossed arms.
Jones wants to break free but Bates has control.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Jones prevents a body shot from Bates.
Jones controlling the action here for a moment.

Bates breaks the clinch.
Jones looks to land a combination but Bates avoids it well.
Jones tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Bates paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Jones misses with a combination
and Bates connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Bates looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Jones falls off balance throwing a combination
and Bates counters with a thumping low kick.
Jones stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jones wants it to stay on the feet.
Jones tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Jones tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

and Bates counters with a stiff right hand.
Jones fails in his attempt to clinch.
Bates circles away from the clinch attempt.
Bates is looking to clinch but Jones is avoiding it.
Jones tries a head kick but it misses.
Jones dodges the punch combination from Bates.

Jones closes the distance looking to clinch

and Bates holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Bates misses with some punches.
Bates prevents Jones from breaking the clinch.
Jones wants to break free but Bates has control.
Jones landing knees to the head.
Bates wants a takedown.
James Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Bates.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Bates pulls guard effortlessly.
Bates looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jones is one step ahead there.

Bates is looking for a triangle but Jones pushes his legs off easily.

Bates is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Bates is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Jones is aware though and is defending well.
Jones is looking to stand up but Bates won't let him.

Bates has a closed guard, preventing Jones from standing up.

Bates has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Bates is looking for a triangle but Jones pushes his legs off easily.
Jones tries to stand but Bates is controlling from the bottom.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Jones has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Bates to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Jones is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Bates pulls down on the head and he's put Jones to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:33 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Chris Bates!
A relieved looking Chris Bates thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
