Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Madaras! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Toshi Ortiz! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Eddie Farnsworth and John Roberts.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! This fight brought to you by 5M nutrition - it's mmmmm tasty. Nice jab by Madaras. Ortiz takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Ortiz uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Madaras.
Madaras looks to score with a jab to the body but Ortiz is just out of range. Madaras misses with a jab to the body
and Ortiz counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Madaras wants to control but Ortiz is keeping busy.
Ortiz thows a huge punch but Madaras dodges it nicely.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Ortiz wants to take a breather but Madaras is having none of it. Ortiz throwing shots but Madaras is blocking nicely. Ortiz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Madaras. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Ortiz controlling the pace. Ortiz drops an elbow to the side of Madaras's head. Ortiz trying to advance position but Madaras counters by regaining guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Madaras looking for a sweep. Not yet Madaras, not yet. Ortiz chips away with some ground and pound. Ortiz lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Ortiz prevents Madaras from getting back to his feet. Ortiz trying to control but Madaras is working from the bottom. Ortiz loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Ortiz is looking to work some ground and pound but Madaras has wrist control. Ortiz landing some decent shots from guard. Madaras has his foot on Ortiz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ortiz works his way back into a safe position though. Madaras controls Ortiz momentarily but Ortiz frees himself.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ortiz trying to control but Madaras is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Madaras looking to control.
Madaras can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Ortiz controls the pace. Ortiz throws a strike but Madaras rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Ortiz is pulling down on Madaras's head to control his posture.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of David Madaras. Ortiz takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Madaras throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Madaras swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Madaras thuds his shin into the meat of Ortiz's side. Madaras throws a series of punches but Ortiz moves out of range. Madaras throws a body punch but Ortiz moves out of range. Ortiz fails to land the takedown. Madaras cracks Ortiz with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Madaras moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Ortiz with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Madaras to score with a decent uppercut. Ortiz has a takedown stuffed. Ortiz misses with a takedown attempt and Madaras decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ortiz's guard. David Madaras has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Toshi Ortiz. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Madaras is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Madaras tries to free his leg and advance position but Ortiz is retaining full guard. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Ortiz has an active guard here but Madaras has managed to pass into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that David Madaras will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Ortiz gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Madaras throws a low kick but Ortiz avoids it. Ortiz misses with a takedown and Madaras counters with a nice double leg into guard. Ortiz wants to hit a switch here but Madaras passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Ortiz there! Madaras unloading with bombs!
That's one minute gone in the round. Madaras controlling from the full mount. Ortiz tries to get back to half guard but can't. Madaras trying to control but Ortiz is having none of it. Madaras looking to finish with strikes here!
That's two minutes gone in the round. The referee warns Ortiz that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Ortiz tries to hold on but Madaras postures up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ortiz wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. Madaras controls the position. Madaras is looking to finish with some ground and pound! What can Ortiz do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Madaras looking to break Ortiz's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Ortiz remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Madaras will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Madaras is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish. Ortiz tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Ortiz is squirming around, avoiding Madaras's attempts to control the action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
David Madaras dominated that second round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!
Ortiz takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Madaras scores with the left hand. Ortiz knows he should have avoided that one. Ortiz has his takedown stuffed so Madaras counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Ortiz keeping moving, preventing Madaras from controlling successfully. Madaras passes Ortiz's left leg - he's now in half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ortiz is trying to maintain the position but Madaras is very close to passing his half guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Ortiz is in trouble now - Madaras has advanced to mount! Madaras looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Madaras has hold of Ortiz's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Ortiz manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Madaras controlling the pace for now. Ortiz wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Madaras.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ortiz is trying desperately to improve position. Ortiz is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Ortiz tries to hold on but Madaras pushes him away. Ortiz tries to buck Madaras off but Madaras takes his back! Ortiz is keeping busy.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ortiz is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Ortiz wants to escape the position.
Toshi Ortiz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Madaras trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Ortiz doesn't escape. I really don't envy Ortiz right now.
And that's the end of the fight! David Madaras showed his dominance in that final round. Well Madaras has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
