PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carver McNulty (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matty Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McNulty comes to the cage accompanied by Still I Rise - Shadows Fall. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Carver McNulty!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matty Johnson!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Yves DeLean and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Johnson displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from McNulty.

McNulty closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Johnson quickly recovers to half guard.

Johnson looking for submissions off his back.
Johnson tries to roll over but McNulty keeps him under control.
McNulty throwing shots but Johnson is blocking nicely.
Johnson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Johnson.

Johnson looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Johnson doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
McNulty preventing the sweep.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McNulty pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Johnson is keeping the position for now.

McNulty stands up over Johnson, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

McNulty sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Johnson's guard.
McNulty winds up and cracks Johnson with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
McNulty not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. McNulty lands a nice short elbow.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. McNulty connects with a nice short shot to Johnson's temple.

Johnson is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but McNulty pulls his head out easily.
Johnson is looking for a sweep. McNulty is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
McNulty is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

McNulty is looking for submissions but instead, Johnson has regained full guard.

Johnson wants to sweep but no luck.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as McNulty accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

McNulty lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

McNulty stands up and waves to Johnson to follow him.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson is working to avoid the ground and pound but McNulty connects with a decent elbow.
McNulty has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Johnson takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
McNulty is chipping away with strikes.
McNulty grinds an elbow into Johnson's temple.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Johnson manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Johnson moves nicely into side control.
McNulty is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Johnson is looking for a kimura but McNulty is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Johnson to get the leverage.
McNulty is staying active underneath Johnson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Johnson passes to full mount!
McNulty really wants to buck Johnson off and get back to his feet.
Johnson lands with some strikes.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Johnson thowing shots but they're missing.
McNulty can't escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carver McNulty dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A decent looking cross lands there for Johnson.

McNulty closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Johnson to the mat! Johnson manages to get full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. McNulty doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. McNulty manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
McNulty lands a couple of elbows.
McNulty postures up and lands a big shot to Johnson's brow.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Johnson had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. McNulty defends it easily.
Johnson is trying to keep McNulty in close.
McNulty is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
McNulty landing some decent shots from guard.

Johnson is looking for a triangle but McNulty pushes his legs off easily.

Johnson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

McNulty connects with a couple of short punches.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Johnson is trying to control the position but McNulty postures up.
McNulty is looking to stand up but Johnson won't let him.

Johnson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and McNulty defends well.

McNulty gets to his feet. Johnson looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
McNulty fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
McNulty with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Johnson to score with a decent uppercut.
Johnson leaves McNulty with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Johnson throws a looping overhand right but McNulty ducks down to avoid it.
McNulty scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Johnson bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps McNulty's head backwards.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A lazy left from Johnson finds it's target.

Johnson darts in and clinches McNulty up against the cage.
Johnson working hard to break the clinch.
Johnson is trying to break free.
Johnson is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Johnson throws a jab when McNulty was well out of range.
Johnson throws an ugly left hook that misses
and McNulty counters with a three punch combo that has Johnson backing up. Johnson nods at McNulty to acknowledge the strikes.
McNulty looks for a takedown but Johnson sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carver McNulty. That's going to take a lot out of him.

McNulty scores with a takedown into Johnson's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McNulty keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Johnson's head.

McNulty has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Johnson to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! McNulty is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Johnson pulls down on the head and he's put McNulty to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Matty Johnson!
