Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shaun Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jake Shields has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Shaun Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jake Shields!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shields throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Johnson tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Shields is in Johnson's guard.

Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Shields gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Johnson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Shields manages to get himself to full guard.
Shields looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Johnson puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Shields is looking to improve his position.
Johnson sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Shields defending well though.
Shields is trying to get back to full guard.
Shields is staying active underneath Johnson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Shields slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Shields looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Johnson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Shields is adopting a defensive guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Shields takes one to the chin there.
Johnson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Shields gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Johnson.
Johnson shoots for a double leg takedown but Shields sprawls well. He's pushed Johnson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Johnson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Shields. Shields circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Shields clinches up with Johnson and pushes him back against the cage.

Shields turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Johnson is not content to let Shields control the position.
Shields in side control lands a decent elbow.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Johnson pushes Shields away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Shields gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A lull in the action here.
Shields working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.

Johnson struggling a bit here.
Shields prevents Johnson from escaping the position.
Shields scoring with punches from side control.
Johnson is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Shields's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Shields working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Shields content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Shields thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Johnson's head.
Johnson wants to improve his position but Shields is controlling well.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Shields looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Shields lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Johnson wants to get back to full guard.
Johnson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Johnson.

Shields is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Johnson looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Shields has picked Johnson up and slammed him! Johnson can't keep hold of the triangle and Shields manages to pass to side control!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Shields is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Johnson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Shields looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Johnson is looking for a sweep.
Johnson is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Shields off and has taken his back!
Shields tries to break free.
Johnson cracks Shields with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Shields from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
Shields wants to control his opponent's hands but Johnson gets his hands free.

Johnson is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Shields trying to control the action but Johnson just sinks the hooks in.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Shields dominated that round.
That's time! Johnson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Shields walks into a stiff left hand from Johnson.
Johnson connects with a leg kick. Shields looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Shields fails with a takedown attempt.
Johnson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Shields.
Shields tries to clinch up.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Shields can do anything to dispel that myth.
Shields is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Johnson throws a big right hand that misses.
Shields bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Johnson's guard.

Shields stands and throws Johnson's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Shields wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.

Johnson is looking to regain half guard here but Shields keeps moving and retains side control.
Johnson is working hard here to advance position.
Johnson throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

Johnson looking for a sweep but Shields has passed into full mount! Oh no!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Johnson wants to hold on but Shields pushes him away.
Jake Shields has got the better of the ground game so far.
Johnson keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Shields is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Johnson can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Johnson is looking to improve his position but Shields isn't that keen on the idea.

Shields looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.


Johnson is rocked!
Shields loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Johnson scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Shields land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Shields stands and salutes the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jake Shields!
