PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Frank Funk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kai Urutaka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kai Urutaka will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Frank Funk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kai Urutaka!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Funk slips a jab and a cross from Urutaka.
Urutaka misses with a few strikes there.
Funk closes the distance and clinches up with Urutaka, looking for a takedown. Funk pushes Urutaka against the cage but Urutaka circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Urutaka misses with a kick to the body.
Funk takes one to the side of the head.

Funk shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Urutaka is trying to defend but Funk finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Funk thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Urutaka keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Funk is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Urutaka has hold of Funk's hands but Funk slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Funk tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Urutaka.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Urutaka is defending against the submission attempts here by Funk.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Funk has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Urutaka is looking for a triangle but Funk pushes his legs off easily.

Funk postures up in Urutaka's guard and throws a big left but Urutaka blocks it.

Urutaka working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Funk doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Funk manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Urutaka has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Funk can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Urutaka really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Funk. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Funk sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Urutaka's guard.

Funk postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Urutaka keeping moving, preventing Funk from controlling successfully.

Funk is looking to take a break and control but Urutaka is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Funk lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Funk is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Urutaka doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Funk.

Funk is working for a kimura but Urutaka is defending it quite comfortably.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Funk dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Urutaka leaves Funk with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Urutaka clinches up with Funk and pushes him back against the cage.
Funk is trying to break the clinch but Urutaka is controlling him.
Urutaka lands an uppercut.

Urutaka successfully pulls guard.
Urutaka preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Urutaka pulls Funk in to control the position.
Funk working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Funk with a flurry of punches that miss.
Urutaka has control of Funk's left arm, preventing Funk from doing any damage.
Funk is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Funk throws a strike but Urutaka rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Funk looking to control.

Urutaka drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Funk manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Urutaka has Funk in his guard.

Urutaka looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Funk scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Funk makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Funk trying to control the position from guard on top but Urutaka is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Urutaka wants to stand but Funk is controlling the position.

Funk cracks Urutaka with a solid left hand.
Funk slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Funk lands an elbow.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Urutaka is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Funk lands a decent elbow from side control.
Funk advances to full mount.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Funk lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Urutaka hang on?

Urutaka takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Funk's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Frank Funk!
A very excited looking Frank Funk rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
