1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Morte! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Morte takes a swing at Gaia's ribcage but misses. Morte throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Gaia scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Gaia thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Morte struggling a bit here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gaia is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Morte knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Morte wants to get back to his feet but Gaia drags him back down. Gaia thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Gaia goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Morte rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Gaia's guard! Nice work there by Morte!
That's one minute gone in the round. Morte connects with a couple of short punches. Gaia is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gaia is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Gaia working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Morte doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Morte manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Gaia is breathing heavily. Gaia keeping moving, preventing Morte from controlling successfully. Morte drops back looking for a leg! Gaia is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gaia manages to kick Morte off! Morte jumps back into Gaia's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Morte drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gaia looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gaia looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gaia!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gaia has knee on belly and moves into mount. Morte keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Gaia is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Morte has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Morte! Gaia is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Morte postures up in Gaia's guard and throws a big left but Gaia blocks it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gaia has his foot on Morte's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Morte works his way back into a safe position though. Morte preventing the sweep. Morte passes into half guard. Gaia looking for submissions off his back. Morte trying to mount his opponent but Gaia defends it. Morte throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Gaia is looking to improve his position.
Morte is working for a submission of some sort.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Gaia keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. The fighters are battling for position here. Gaia manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Gaia bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Morte's guard. Gaia stands and throws Morte's legs to the side, diving into side control. Gaia tries for a kimura but Morte is defending well. Gaia is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Morte is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Morte is looking to reverse the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Robin Gaia dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Gaia bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Gaia is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Morte has escaped the position, nice work there. Morte prevents Gaia from moving into mount. Morte trying to control but Gaia flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back! Morte won't enjoy being in this position. Gaia looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Morte is tapping - it's over boys! Gaia picks up the submission victory!
