Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kerry Paul! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bj Cole! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Paul shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cole as he jumps to the side. Paul ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Cole moves away. Nice uppercut lands for Paul. That snapped Cole's head back.
Paul rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cole moves out of range and avoids them all easily. The fight moves into the clinch position. Paul tries to circle away but Cole has him pinned against the cage. Paul can't break the clinch.
Cole misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Cole has Paul pressed against the cage, preventing Paul from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Paul wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Cole breaks from the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Paul jabbing away but nothing is landing. Cole looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Cole throws a big right hand that misses. Paul wants to stand and escape but Cole is having none of it. Cole stands up from guard. Let's bang! Paul is breathing heavily. Cole avoids the head kick by Paul.
Paul rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cole moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Bj Cole seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Cole closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Paul to the mat! Paul manages to get full guard. Paul can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Cole controls the pace. Cole with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Cole controls from within his opponent's guard. Cole thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Cole is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Bj Cole wasn't active enough on the ground. Paul tries a head kick but it misses.
A head kick misses from Paul. Cole shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Cole was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Cole is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Paul can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Cole takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cole lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Cole controlling his opponent. Paul knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cole on the ground. The referee warns Paul that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Paul is in all sorts of trouble here.
Paul tries to hold on but Cole pushes him away. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bj Cole dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Cole closes the distance and clinches. Cole manages to break the clinch.
Paul throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Cole stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Cole slaps away a takedown attempt from Paul, before circling back to the center of the mat. Cole swats away the attempt to clinch by Paul. Cole bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Cole cracks Paul with an elbow. That is naaassty. Cole tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. Cole is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Paul's shoulder. That is not cool. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cole cracks Paul with a big elbow. Cole has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Paul is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Cole is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Paul has escaped the position, nice work there. Cole working the head and body with strikes. Cole scoring with punches and elbows.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cole tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Cole has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Cole has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Paul wants to slow Cole down by chopping away at his legs. Paul has a takedown stuffed. Paul tries to clinch but Cole moves out of range.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cole dives in and grabs Paul's left leg, looking for a takedown. Paul pushes down on Cole's head and hops out. Paul throws a head kick that misses. Cole closes the distance and clinches. Cole has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Paul is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Paul is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Paul tries to break free but Cole pushes him back against the cage. Cole's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Cole tries a head kick but it misses.
Paul fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Cole looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Paul can't keep his opponent in guard - Cole advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Cole sitting and controlling from the half guard. Paul is looking to control Cole's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Paul avoid being mounted? As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Cole slows the pace down in half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bj Cole showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!
Cole has a takedown stuffed. Paul blocks a leg kick. Paul connects with a body shot. Paul throws a nice head kick!
Cole fails in his attempt to clinch. Paul's corner calls for a 1-2. Paul obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Paul looks to land a body kick but Cole moved away. Paul tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. A head kick misses from Paul. Cole drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Cole is standing up over Paul. Paul looks to escape but Cole dives into side control.
Cole decides to take the fight back to the feet. Cole throws a right hand that Paul ducks under and follows up with a left that Paul also avoids with ease. Cole shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Paul tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Cole is able to avoid easily. Paul tries to bum rush Cole with a series of wild strikes but Cole uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cole shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cole showed some decent athleticism there. Cole controlling the pace. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Cole seems to be looking for submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Paul scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Cole manages to mount him!
Cole lands a heavy elbow. Cole controlling from mount. Paul taking shots to the head. Kerry Paul has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Paul is in a horrible position here. Cole smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Bj Cole has got the better of the ground game so far. Cole lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cole takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Cole scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Paul?
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Paul has left one of his arms exposed and Cole doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Paul screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.
