The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bastos tries to clinch but Malik is having none of it. Bastos bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Bastos creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Malik is pushing Bastos's head away, looking to escape. Bastos manages to hold on to the position though. Bastos wants to lay and pray for a moment but Malik keeps working. Malik is not in a great position here, taking some shots. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Bastos working the ground and pound but Malik is defending the strikes. Bastos is chipping away with strikes.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Bastos connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Malik some visible discomfort.
Bastos wants to control but Malik is keeping him busy. Bastos in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bastos landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Malik wants to get back to his feet but Bastos drags him back down. Malik parries the strikes from Bastos easily there. Bastos is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Malik to escape.
Bastos misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Bastos looks up at the clock and then as Malik takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Bastos smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
